SIX Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, July 24, 1996 Be skeptical of calls If you get a call for someone who wants to come to your house and tell you what to do in case of a chemical accident at the Umatilla Army Depot, county officials say you should be skeptical. Geoff Tyree, public informa tion officer with Morrow Coun ty Emergency Management, says no one from the county or state Chemical Stockpile Emergency Preparedness Pro gram is calling people, and no one from the Army is either. And nobody has told govern ment officials they were plan ning to offer the service to depot-area residents. "W e'd like to hear what residents are being told, because w e're responsible for protecting the public in the unlikely event of a depot em ergency," said Tyree. A senior citizen in Irrigon received a call from a woman who said she'd like to come to the senior citizen's home to ex plain what residents should do in case of a nerve gas leak at the depot. The caller did not iden tify herself or ask for money. The Irrigon resident was skeptical, took the woman's number and hung up. She then reported the call to the city mayor. The Morrow County Sheriff's Department is investi gating the call. Senior citizens centers in Morrow and Uma tilla counties have been alerted. Tyree says if you've received a call like this, contact him at 922-4431, or call the Morrow County Sheriff's Department, 676-5317.
