Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, June 12, 1996 - FIVE OWGL announce 1996 wheat cake Schools release honor roll list It's county fair season in Ore gon and that means it's also time for the cake baking contest sponsored by the O regon W heat G row ers League (OWGL). The pumpkin cake recipe was recently named the official cake for the 19% OWGL state cake baking contest that will be held at county fairs throughout Oregon this summer. Pump kin, which makes this an especially moist cake, joins the list of recipes featuring "O re gon-grown” ingredients used in other OWGL contest cakes. Oregon soft white cake flour is one constant ingredient featur ed in all of the cake recipes. The cake baking contest, sponsored by the OWGL, is held to increase public aware ness of the wheat industry in Oregon and will be conducted at all of the state's 36 county fairs, as well as the Oregon State Fair for those who have not entered their county fair. Contest entry information is available at extension and fair offices in each county. OWGL will pay premium awards after notification from the fair offices. Premium awards are: first $10, second $5 and third $3. Following are the rules for entering the OWGL cake bak ing contest: the cake baking contest will be held at local county fairs; cakes will be judg ed at each fair; each contestant must use the same 19% pum p kin cake recipe; no substitu tions, additions or deletions will be allowed to the official recipe, except for those neces sary at altitudes over 3,500 feet; contestants must be a resident of the county in which they enter; premium books with rules regarding entries for the contest are available at local ex tension or fair offices; contes tants must be 18 or older to enter. Schmidt to receive degree Lana Schmidt, Heppner, will be among approximately 3,450 University of Oregon degree candidates and graduates eligi ble to participate in the cere monies to be held Saturday, June 15, at Hayward Field, Eugene. To be included on the honor roll 'A ', students must earn a grade point average of 3.5-4. (Heppner: 3.33-4.) Tenth grade: fourth quarter 'A'-Kara Miller and Jenny Sul- NOTICE OF BUDGET HEARING FORM LB-1 a Following is th e official OWGL 19% pumpkin cake: % cup shortening l ’A cups sugar 2 eggs 2V* cups cake flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt Vi teaspoon baking soda 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg Vi teaspoon ground ginger 1 cup solid pack pumpkin Vi cup milk Preheat oven to 350° F. Beat shortening and sugar until fluf fy; blend in eggs. Sift together flour, baking powder, salt, bak ing soda and spices. Add dry ingredients alternately with combined pumpkin and milk, mixing well after each addition. Spoon into two greased and floured eight inch pans. Bake 30-35 minutes or until cake tests done. Cool 10 minutes; remove from pans. Cool completely on wire racks. Cream Cheese Frosting Vi cup butter 1/8 teaspoon salt 3 oz. cream cheese 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 lb powdered sugar Combine melted butter and cream cheese an d blen d thoroughly. Add sugar, salt and vanilla and beat well. If the mixture is too thick to spread easily, add milk Vi teaspoon at a time.
