OWGL announce 1996 wheat cake Schools release honor roll list
It's county fair season in Ore
gon and that means it's also
time for the cake baking contest
sponsored by the O regon
W heat G row ers League
(OWGL).
The pumpkin cake recipe
was recently named the official
cake for the 19% OWGL state
cake baking contest that will be
held at county fairs throughout
Oregon this summer. Pump
kin, which makes this an
especially moist cake, joins the
list of recipes featuring "O re
gon-grown” ingredients used
in other OWGL contest cakes.
Oregon soft white cake flour is
one constant ingredient featur
ed in all of the cake recipes.
The cake baking contest,
sponsored by the OWGL, is
held to increase public aware
ness of the wheat industry in
Oregon and will be conducted
at all of the state's 36 county
fairs, as well as the Oregon
State Fair for those who have
not entered their county fair.
Contest entry information is
available at extension and fair
offices in each county. OWGL
will pay premium awards after
notification from the fair offices.
Premium awards are: first $10,
second $5 and third $3.
Following are the rules for
entering the OWGL cake bak
ing contest: the cake baking
contest will be held at local
county fairs; cakes will be judg
ed at each fair; each contestant
must use the same 19% pum p
kin cake recipe; no substitu
tions, additions or deletions
will be allowed to the official
recipe, except for those neces
sary at altitudes over 3,500 feet;
contestants must be a resident
of the county in which they
enter; premium books with
rules regarding entries for the
contest are available at local ex
tension or fair offices; contes
tants must be 18 or older to
enter.
Schmidt to
receive degree
Lana Schmidt, Heppner, will
be among approximately 3,450
University of Oregon degree
candidates and graduates eligi
ble to participate in the cere
monies to be held Saturday,
June 15, at Hayward Field,
Eugene. Schmidt will receive a
bachelor's degree in biology.
