■'zry . *# *-4r IES/IHS sponsor artist in residence Roger Butterfield with lone School students. Roger Butterfield, artist in education, recently completed a two week residency at the lone Schools. He taught les sons in the art of carving to students in kindergarten through sixth grade and the junior/senior high art classes. Butterfield used mostly edi ble materials such as fruits and vegetables in teaching elemen tary students to carve. Rod Tay lor donated potatoes from his farm to be used in some of the carvings. Older students work ed with more difficult materials such as soap and wax. An open house display of student work was well attend ed by parents and community members on the last day of the workshop. "The Artist in Education Pro gram is unique in that it offers students an opportunity to broaden their knowledge of art and enhance skills by working with professional artists," said teacher Betty Rietm ann. "Teachers and students agreed that the program this year was educational and also fu n ." Butterfield was taught the folk art of pocketknife whittling at the age of seven by his grandfather. He continued his art education at Southern Ore gon State College, majoring in design and sculpture. He pre sently produces wood sculp tures on commission for homes and businesses in the West. St« Patrick’s Senior Center Bulletin Board There were 103 people present for the senior dinner Jan. 3, and two meals were home delivered. Members of the Seventh- day Adventist and Nazarene churches served. Elsie Huston won the meal ticket and Isabell Perry, the bingo ticket. Ralph Struthers and Bill Cox set the tables, Lynn Bibby and Elsie Huston were the hostesses. Rose Marie Buschke and Eleanor were at the sign-in table. Jim Bruns gave hearing aid assistance and Home Health nurse Sandy took blood pressures before the meal. The menu for Jan. 17 will be lamb chops, mashed potatoes and gravy, coleslaw, fruit, rolls and cookies. Members of the Meth odist Church will serve. Nine seniors went by bus to the New-Year's Eve dance at Her- miston. They enjoyed the dance and the large crowd of seniors. The next bus to a dance at Hermiston is Saturday, Jan. 13. The bus will leave Heppner at 7 p.m. There is a sign-up sheet in the Senior Center office. Bus driver Ed Baker says he appreciates the contributions made by the bus riders during 1995. They help keep the bus operating. One table of cards was in play Friday, Jan. 5. Seven seniors enjoyed the video "Free Willy 2 " Sunday evening. Chase Nedeau E. Chase, 79, of Fossil, died Saturday, January 6, 1996, at Oregon Health Sciences University in Port land. The funeral was Wednesday, January 10, 1996 at the United Methodist Church in Fossil. Concluding service and burial followed at the Condon Ma sonic Cemetery. Mrs. Chase was born Febru ary 20, 1916, at the family home in Ferry Canyon near Condon, to Lewis and Janet Geddes Couture. She grew up in the Condon area and attended area schools, graduating from Con don High School in 1934. After attending business col lege in Portland, she returned to Condon where she was em ployed as Gilliam County De puty Clerk. In 1938, she married Pete Fisk at Goldendale, Washington. They lived at Prineville and in Glendale, Arizona, before re turning to Condon. Mr. Fisk died returning from active du ty after World War II. She married Donald E. Chase on November 8, 1946, at Port land. They moved to Fossil where they owned and operat ed Value Variety store. Mr. Chase died in 1989. Mrs. Chase was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Fossil United Metho dist Church. Survivors include a daugh ter, Janet Allen of lone; a son, Jack Chase of Redding, Califor nia, and four grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the Fossil Ambu lance Fund, P.O. Market Report PA’s Report Lutheran services change A change for worship service for the Lutheran congregations of Hope of Heppner and Valby of lone has been scheduled for Jan. 14, the second Sunday in January. The Jan. 14 worship service at Hope Lutheran Church will be at 9 a.m. Valby Lutheran Church will hold worship ser vice at 11 a.m., followed by a church potluck dinner.
