Roger Butterfield with lone School students.
Roger Butterfield, artist in
education, recently completed
a two week residency at the
lone Schools. He taught les
sons in the art of carving to
students in kindergarten
through sixth grade and the
junior/senior high art classes.
Butterfield used mostly edi
ble materials such as fruits and
vegetables in teaching elemen
tary students to carve. Rod Tay
lor donated potatoes from his
farm to be used in some of the
carvings. Older students work
ed with more difficult materials
such as soap and wax.
An open house display of
student work was well attend
ed by parents and community
members on the last day of the
workshop.
"The Artist in Education Pro

students an opportunity to
broaden their knowledge of art
and enhance skills by working
with professional artists," said
teacher Betty Rietm ann.
"Teachers and students agreed
that the program this year was

Butterfield was taught the

grandfather. He continued his
art education at Southern Ore
