They also had eight By Kara Miller Heppner head-to-head match The Cardinals met the Dufur players contribute to the offen * By Kara Miller The Christmas holiday vaca tion brought out a large crowd of fans to support their teams as the two south Morrow County high schools met at lone for a head-to-head contest on the basketball court. lone was suffering from the effect of the flu bug that hit the area and lack of healthy players cancel ed the junior varsity game and forced varsity coach, Dana Heideman, to go to his re serves. Defense and controlling the boards enabled the Lady Car dinals to beat the Heppner Fillies, 43-28. This was an even ing of threes. Melissa McElli- gott led all scorers with a game- high 23 points, hitting three from behind the three-point line. Both teams opened the quar ter with very cold shooting. Then, with three minutes to go in the first quarter, McElligott scored the game's first eight points, all within a minute. McElligott scored on a three- pointer, a steal resulting in a lay-up and her second try. Lori Moeller accounted for two for Heppner, and the quarter end ed with lone ahead by six. The Fillies kept chipping away at lone's lead. Annie His- ler started with her first of two baskets, followed by Lexi Mat- teson's basket. Moeller hit a free throw in answer to the Cardinals' McElligott free throw and Laree Anderson's free throw and field goal. The stage was set for the Fillies' Tina Kemp to tie the game at 12 points with her free throw with 3Vi minutes re maining in the half. The Car dinals weren't to be denied however, and went on a scor ing spree with two baskets by Kara Miller, one each from McElligott and Anderson and a free throw by Anderson. Moeller scored two for the Fillies and the half ended, lone 21, Heppner 14. McElligott extended lone's lead to 11 with a lay-up and two free throws. The teams traded baskets the rest of the quarter, with McElligott's bas ket, Jenny Sullivan's basket and two Miller free throws being answered by a Hisler three pointer, a Stormy How ard basket, and Moeller basket and free throw. The third quarter ended with lone 33, Heppner 22. McElligott started the fourth quarter with her third trey to extend the lead to 14. But that lead was quickly cut to 10 by the Fillies' Jossie Evans' two points and Kemp hitting two free throws. lone's Suzi Heide man made two free throws, but Heppner's Howard hit a field goal. The Cardinals then widened their lead with baskets by An derson and Heideman and a free throw from McElligott. Mc Elligott contributed to the defensive pressure with six steals. Miller led lone on the glass with seven rebounds. Freshman reserve, Tori Odinet, met the varsity challenge with a good scrappy defense and re bounding game. Moeller paced the Fillies with a team-high 10 points. The final score was lone 43, Heppner 28. Heppner-28. Lady Cardinals lose to Vikings By Kara Miller The lone Cardinals traveled to Umatilla Dec. 29 for a second meeting between these two teams this season. It was a good defensive and physical game, and Umatilla was out to avenge their earlier loss to lone. The Vikings won, 66-51. Melissa McElligott scored two three-pointers and a game-high 23 points and grabbed eight re bounds, but couldn't get lone past Umatilla. Early foul trou ble cut into Suzi Heideman's playing time. She scored 16 points and had seven rebounds before fouling out. Both teams shot 38 percent from the floor, with the Vikings getting only three more baskets than the Cardinals. The big dif ference came at the foul line, lone shot seven for 17, while Umatilla hit 18-24. Umatilla is only the second team to out-rebound the Car dinals this season and they pulled down 33 to the Cards' 31. The Vikings outscored lone 23 to 13 in the final quarter after only leading by two at the break. sive scoring effort with the team shooting a 50 percent game. The girls' JV game will begin at 3 p.m. Rangers for the first time on Fri day, Jan. 5, in a non-counting game at lone. With all of the Cardinal lineup back and healthy, it proved to be an ex citing game. Dufur's front line is quick and fast, led by their senior speedster, Coiya Baker, but lone surprised them with their own brand of speed and won the contest, 62-47. lone got the tip-off but started the game with a turn over. Dufur couldn't capitalize on the error, however, and Suzi Heideman got the re bound for lone. She sent a long pass the full court to Melissa McElligott for an easy lay-in, which gave lone two and the first points on the board. lone gave Dufur many op portunities to score with trips to the foul line, which kept the Rangers within one or two points for the first quarter. McElligott scored three three- point goals in the first half and the score was lone 31, Dufur 20 at halftime. lone scored 14 points to Du fur's eight in the third quarter and added 17 more in the fourth. The Cardinals' pressure defense was a big element to Dufur-47.
