The Christmas holiday vaca

of fans to support their teams
as the two south Morrow
County high schools met at
lone for a head-to-head contest
on the basketball court. lone
was suffering from the effect of
the flu bug that hit the area and
lack of healthy players cancel
ed the junior varsity game and
forced varsity coach, Dana
Heideman, to go to his re
serves.
Defense and controlling the
boards enabled the Lady Car
dinals to beat the Heppner
Fillies, 43-28. This was an even
ing of threes. Melissa McElli-
gott led all scorers with a game-
high 23 points, hitting three
from behind the three-point
line.
Both teams opened the quar
ter with very cold shooting.
Then, with three minutes to go
in the first quarter, McElligott
scored the game's first eight
points, all within a minute.
McElligott scored on a three-
pointer, a steal resulting in a
lay-up and her second try. Lori
Moeller accounted for two for
Heppner, and the quarter end
ed with lone ahead by six.
The Fillies kept chipping
away at lone's lead. Annie His-
ler started with her first of two
baskets, followed by Lexi Mat-
teson's basket. Moeller hit a
free throw in answer to the
Cardinals' McElligott free
throw and Laree Anderson's
free throw and field goal.
The stage was set for the
Fillies' Tina Kemp to tie the
game at 12 points with her free
throw with 3Vi minutes re
maining in the half. The Car
dinals weren't to be denied
however, and went on a scor
ing spree with two baskets by
Kara Miller, one each from
McElligott and Anderson and a
free throw by Anderson.
Moeller scored two for the
Fillies and the half ended, lone
21, Heppner 14.
McElligott extended lone's
lead to 11 with a lay-up and
two free throws. The teams
traded baskets the rest of the
quarter, with McElligott's bas
ket, Jenny Sullivan's basket
and two Miller free throws
being answered by a Hisler
three pointer, a Stormy How
ard basket, and Moeller basket
and free throw. The third
quarter ended with lone 33,
Heppner 22.
McElligott started the fourth
quarter with her third trey to
extend the lead to 14. But that
lead was quickly cut to 10 by
the Fillies' Jossie Evans' two
points and Kemp hitting two
free throws. lone's Suzi Heide
man made two free throws, but
Heppner's Howard hit a field
goal.
The Cardinals then widened
their lead with baskets by An
derson and Heideman and a
free throw from McElligott. Mc
Elligott contributed to the
defensive pressure with six
steals. Miller led lone on the
glass with seven rebounds.

points. The final score was lone

Lady Cardinals lose to Vikings
By Kara Miller
The lone Cardinals traveled
to Umatilla Dec. 29 for a second
meeting between these two
teams this season. It was a
good defensive and physical
game, and Umatilla was out to
avenge their earlier loss to lone.
The Vikings won, 66-51.
Melissa McElligott scored two
three-pointers and a game-high
23 points and grabbed eight re
bounds, but couldn't get lone

playing time. She scored 16
points and had seven rebounds
before fouling out.

from the floor, with the Vikings
getting only three more baskets
than the Cardinals. The big dif
ference came at the foul line,
lone shot seven for 17, while
Umatilla hit 18-24.
Umatilla is only the second
team to out-rebound the Car
dinals this season and they
pulled down 33 to the Cards'

"We came together as a team

grabbed 17 rebounds and add
ed four blocked shots. While
McElligott led all scorers with

pass the full court to Melissa
McElligott for an easy lay-in,
