Jo e Bacon shoots jum p shot The lone Cardinals traveled to Maupin, Friday, Dec. 15, to take on the Sherman County Huskies in the first boys' game of the Wasco County Tourna ment. The Cards won, 56-41. The Cardinals got off to a slow start, taking an 8-6 lead after the first quarter. Sherman Co. cut the lead to one at the half, but the Cards still lead 17-16. The third quarter finish ed the same way with the Red- birds holding a slim 30-29 lead. In the fourth quarter, the Cardinals picked up the inten sity and outscored the Huskies 20-12 to take the victory. The Cards were led in scor ing by Luke Swanson with 12, and Joe Bacon with 11. All nine of the Cardinals who played scored. Bacon also led Cardinal rebounders as he pulled down eight. Cindy Osterlund honored by Extension Cindy Osterlund of Condon was recently honored by the Oregon State University (OSU) Extension Association at the 1996 Extension Annual Con ference in Corvallis. Osterlund, a Gilliam County Extension agent working with 4-H youth development pro grams, received a Newer Facul f ty Award, given to those with less than seven years experi ence. She was honored for her creative and innovative pro grams that have increased 4-H participation since she began in 1991. She helps youths develop public speaking and presenta tion programs in the county and regionally. By K ara M iller It's always a tough game when Condon and lone face each other, whether it is in league action or tournament play and this game was no ex ception. A good defensive mat chup and equally exciting fast breaks by a quick offense, created a fan-pleasing contest, lone ended up with a 43-36 win over the Blue Devils. Condon's 5'11 "sophomore, Margaret Schott, got the tip off to the Blue Devils and their An nie Durfey got the first two points on the scoreboard, lone's Stephanie Haguewood fouled Katie McCoin who scored with a free throw. lone had a turnover and McCoin scored again for the Devils. With the score 5-0 in Con don's favor, the Cardinals needed to put some points on the board. Haguewood got the ball and put the first two points up for lone. Suzy Heideman and Laree Anderson each hit a basket for lone but the low scoring first quarter ended with Condon in the lead, 11-8. Kara Miller started the se cond quarter off by hitting a bucket from the three point range and Melissa McElligott got the steal from Condon and scored two points to put lone in the lead by two. Condon's Kacee Kennedy fouled McElli gott, who hit both shots from the free throw line and lone started to widen the score mar gin. Heideman had a good quarter, hitting 3-4 free throws and a field goal. The Blue Devils' Schott proved a for midable adversary by blocking several shots put up by both Cardinals' 6' Heideman and 5 '8 " McElligott. The quarter ended with lone in the lead, 25-20. Heideman started the third quarter off with a two point play followed by a three point goal from McElligott. McElligott picked up her fourth foul and spent most of the quarter on the sideline. Anderson picked off several key rebounds and steals and the quarter ended with lone ahead by four, 30-26. McElligott got her fifth and last foul in the early minutes of the fourth quarter and it look ed like lone was going to be in foul trouble when Heideman and Jenny Sullivan were each called for a foul and Anderson, Haguewood and Miller all had three fouls each. The fast-paced game was beginning to show on the players as both teams were getting frequent fouls call ed on them. Condon couldn't capitalize on the bonus however, and Haguewood scored two more with a perfect lay-in. Miller followed with another bucket from three point range. Miller was fouled and added a point. Anderson was fouled and hit a bonus. Miller was fouled again and hit both bonus points. Haguewood made another field goal for two points, was foulded and hit one of her bonus shots. Heideman was fouled and made one of her bonus points. The final buzzer rang with lone ahead 43-36. McElligott led lone with 12 points, Heideman followed with 10. Haguewood and Mill er each added nine and Ander son had three. Heideman led the rebounding effort with nine and Anderson pulled down six. Other schools attending were Sher man County Huskies and the Condon Blue Devils. The Cardinals Varsity girls opened the tournament in a matchup against a veteran Class 2-A Sherman County squad. The Cards lost, 45-44. In the first quarter, lone out- scored the Huskies two to one and lone held the lead at half time, 30-20. Melissa McElligott hit three out of three three- point goals to help the Cards from the outside. The second half opened with Sherman Co. using a different offense and the Huskies 5'10" junior, Tyan Sanderson, began to get to the hoop unchallenged with easy jump shots under the basket. The Cardinals lost their mo mentum, began making errors and their shooting went cold, scoring just six points in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, lone had several play ers in foul trouble and the Huskies tied the game with just minutes left in the game. A free throw put the Huskies ahead and lone ran out ot time before they could score. The game ended with Sherman Co. win ning the game by one point, 45-44. Sherman Co. had 25 at tempts at the free throw line while lone had seven. Suzy Heideman was leading scorer for lone with 16 and led the re bounding with nine.
