It's always a tough game
when Condon and lone face
each other, whether it is in
league action or tournament
play and this game was no ex
ception. A good defensive mat
chup and equally exciting fast
breaks by a quick offense,
created a fan-pleasing contest,
lone ended up with a 43-36 win
over the Blue Devils.
Condon's 5'11 "sophomore,
Margaret Schott, got the tip off
to the Blue Devils and their An
nie Durfey got the first two
points on the scoreboard,
lone's Stephanie Haguewood
fouled Katie McCoin who
scored with a free throw. lone
had a turnover and McCoin
scored again for the Devils.
With the score 5-0 in Con
don's favor, the Cardinals
needed to put some points on
the board. Haguewood got the
ball and put the first two points
up for lone. Suzy Heideman
and Laree Anderson each hit a
basket for lone but the low
scoring first quarter ended with
Condon in the lead, 11-8.
Kara Miller started the se
cond quarter off by hitting a
bucket from the three point
range and Melissa McElligott
got the steal from Condon and
scored two points to put lone
in the lead by two. Condon's
Kacee Kennedy fouled McElli
gott, who hit both shots from
the free throw line and lone
started to widen the score mar
gin. Heideman had a good
quarter, hitting 3-4 free throws
and a field goal. The Blue
Devils' Schott proved a for
midable adversary by blocking
several shots put up by both
Cardinals' 6' Heideman and
5 '8 " McElligott. The quarter
ended with lone in the lead,
25-20.
Heideman started the third
quarter off with a two point
play followed by a three point
goal from McElligott. McElligott
picked up her fourth foul and
spent most of the quarter on
the sideline. Anderson picked
off several key rebounds and
steals and the quarter ended
with lone ahead by four, 30-26.
McElligott got her fifth and
last foul in the early minutes of
the fourth quarter and it look
ed like lone was going to be in
foul trouble when Heideman
and Jenny Sullivan were each
called for a foul and Anderson,
Haguewood and Miller all had
three fouls each. The fast-paced
game was beginning to show
on the players as both teams
were getting frequent fouls call
ed on them.
Condon couldn't capitalize
on the bonus however, and
Haguewood scored two more
with a perfect lay-in. Miller
followed with another bucket
from three point range. Miller
was fouled and added a point.
Anderson was fouled and hit a
bonus. Miller was fouled again
and hit both bonus points.
Haguewood made another
field goal for two points, was
foulded and hit one of her
bonus shots. Heideman was
fouled and made one of her
bonus points.
The final buzzer rang with
lone ahead 43-36.
McElligott led lone with 12
points, Heideman followed
with 10. Haguewood and Mill
er each added nine and Ander
son had three. Heideman led
the rebounding effort with nine
and Anderson pulled down six.
Anderson 1 1-2 3, Haguewood 4 1-2 9,
Heideman 3 4-7 10, McElligott 4 3-3 12,
Miller 2 3-6 9, Holtz, Odinet, J. Sullivan
Totals 14 12-20 43.
Three point goals: Miller 2, McElligott 1.
Fouled out: McElligott.
