TWO - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, December 13, 1995 Lady Cardinals beat Fillies Program set for All Saints'Church Valby Lutheran plans Advent services All Saints' Episcopal Church in Heppner will host a child ren's Christmas program dur ing worship at 10:30 a.m. this Sunday, Dec. 17. The children will tell the Christmas story through words and pictures with music for the whole congregation. Father A1 Miller will celebrate Holy Communion at All Saints' this third Sunday in Advent. A time for fellowship and conver sation will follow worship. Guests are welcome to at tend. A special mid-week Advent service will be observed at Valby Lutheran Church, lone, on Wednesday evening, Dec. 13, at 7 p.m. Pastor Stan Hoob- ing will bring a message entitl ed, ” The Source of Light...and Life” , based on the reading of St. John 1:6-8, 19-28. Sarah Carlson will play the piano. After the service, a short meet ing of the church council will be held and there will be an op portunity to decorate the Christmas tree. This Sunday, Dec. 17, at 9 a.m ., the Valby Lutheran Church in lone will observe an Advent communion service. By Kara Miiler The Lady Cardinals Varsity basketball squad took the floor against the Heppner Fillies Tuesday, Dec. 5, and won a hard-earned victory, 62-56. The two teams are always up for the challenge of competition against each other, and this was a good game to watch. The game opened with lone getting possession of the ball. Heppner returned to score the first basket, but foul trouble kept Heppner from staying ahead. Free throws were the key and lone's leading shooters were Brenda Holtz and Melissa McElligott-both had consecu Ben Hubert, a recent transfer to H eppner High School (HHS), is the school winner for the 1995-% American Legion National High School Oratoric al Contest. Hubert's speech was titled, "Answering Amer ica's Call For...Change” . Toni Kemp was second with "Answering America's Call For Us to Accept Each O ther". In third place were Josh Coiner, Mandi Gutierrez and Brandi Marshall. HHS language arts teacher Linda Dutcher commented that the decision was a difficult one because there were so many good entries. A By Kara Miller lone Cardinals girls' Varsity team jumped out in front quickly and controlled the tem po of the entire game against Pilot Rock, Friday, Dec. 8. The Cards beat the Rockets, 74-31. Pilot Rock never got an edge and the Cardinals came on strong. lone's defense kept the home team to few scores and the offensive moves from all the Cardinal players kept in creasing lone's lead. lone's leading scorer was Suzy Heideman with 19 points. Laree Anderson and Melissa McElligott followed with 14 each. The game was close and competitive, with Heppner edging out the Cardinals by eight, 25-33. lone jumped out to a 5-4 lead in the first quarter with a basket by Brenda Holtz and a three- point shot from Kara Miller. lone got into foul trouble and finished the game with 21 fouls against their record, while Heppner had 13. Tori Odinet and Niki Sulli- in Heppner on Sunday, Dec. 24 at 10 a.m., with an open house at the Lutheran parsonage (the home of the Hoobings) from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. A celebration of candlelight, carols and communion will be the highlight of the 9 p.m. Christmas Eve service at Valby.
