■ * Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner. Oreflon Wednesday, October 18, 1995 - FIVE Obituary Letters to the Editor Gene Lancaster Sr. Setting the record straight on story To the Editor: Since the Ruralite never cor rects a mistake in their editing, please could I impose on you to correct the incongrous statements about me? The ed itor stated, "from an early age, she used wagons and buggies to get groceries, do the bank ing and bill paying and make special deliveries." The way Merlyn sent it in, it should have read, "So n Lowell Turner and daughter Erna Winchester started shopping at a very young age, and wore out three Chamber Chatter By Claudia Hughes, Chamber Manager wagons and three different siz ed doll buggies to carry gro ceries home in ." They did pay the bills with checks and did my banking. They did not use wagons and buggies to carry my loot to the bank, like Ruralite insinuated. When I was a small child, Santa could not get down through the old black stovepipe and out through the heating stove door with wagons and doll buggies, therefore I had no way to carry groceries home. I would be glad to share my true first shopping experience for my mother with you. When I was five years old, I was directed to go up Main Street and look for the dry goods store. The first store that I entered turned out to be a saloon. The bartender was kind and put me out on the street and headed me up towards Thompson Bro thers General Store. I entered four more saloons before I found the proper place to pur chase a spool of sewing thread. In those days Heppner sup ported nine saloons; no won der it was such a problem for me to find the proper place that sold thread. My Sincere Appreciation, (s) Lois Winchester October has arrived with leaves floating gently to the ground; billowing clouds after a cleansing rain making the sunset pink, peach and purple; hunters here, there and everywhere; and spooks and pumpkins signaling Hallo ween.
