While here, the goup en joyed some sightseeing trips around the country. Fireworks stand to open Ruth Locust initiates members Ruth-Locust chapter #32 OES initiated two new members, Sylvia Ladd Sandford and Wayland Hyatt at the June 12 meeting. Installation of officers for the next year will be held July 10 at 7:30 p.m. at the Masonic Hall. Pat Hyatt and John Wood will serve as worthy matron and worthy patron. The public is invited to attend. Shopping tour Oregon grains commission to meet The Oregon Grains Commis sion will hold a regular com mission meeting and budget hearing Friday, June 30, at the Oregon Wheat Commission conference room; 1200 NW Front Ave., Suite 520; Portland. The meeting will begin at 9 a.m ., and the hearing will begin at 1 p.m. Commission meetings are open to the public and anyone wishing to participate is welcome to do so. The Oregon Grains Commission complies with the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA). Anyone who would like to attend the meeting, but who needs special scheduled at Nordstroms P hoto by April H ilton-S ykes Heppner Lion Club members Steve Rhea (!) and Mike Mills display fireworks to be sold. The Fourth of July is rapidly approaching and the Heppner Lion's Club has announced hours for its fireworks stand on Main Street. Hours will be 1 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 29, Friday, June 30, Sunday and Monday, July 2 and 3; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 1, and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. or until the fireworks are sold out on Tuesday, July 4. Post office employees receive awards A shopping tour departing 'from lone with a destination of Nordstrom and Lloyd Center, Portland, has been scheduled for Saturday, July 29. Spon sored by C reative Care Preschool of lone, the bus tour will leave lone at 6:30 a.m. and pick up Gilliam County pas sengers at approximately 7:15 a.m. in Arlington. After a full day, the shoppers will arrive b^ck in Arlington at about 9 p.m. and to lone at approx imately 10 p.m. The charge is $28 per person or $26 if registering with one or more other passengers. Includ ed in the fare is a continental breakfast, sandwich dinner, beverages, gift bags, hospitali ty room and prize drawings. Reservations are on a first come, first serve basis. Barb Watkins and Jeri Wight, Heppner Postal employees, have received special achieve ment awards for outstanding service from the Portland district, which includes all of Oregon and portions of south west Washington. McGuire said he nominated Watkins and Wight for their "outstanding service above and beyond, friendly service, and their attitude." "I've been in Post Offices where clerks just do what they have to ," said McGuire. "Barb and Jeri go beyond and do whatever they can for the customer." Watkins and Wight were each awarded $250. This is Wight's second award. She has worked for the Post Office for 19 years. Watkins was hired in Nov. of 1992. In T h e Heppner Gazette Your A d s A re Read Call 676-9228 to place your ad to hold VBS Friends Forever, a "unique, fun-packed" vacation Bible school, will begin July 10 from 2-5 p.m . at the Heppner Seventh-D ay Adventist Church. The Bible school, which teaches children ages 4-12 "how to make friends and survive in their busy world", runs through July 14. The children will learn home survival skills such as making a bed, doing the dishes and simple first aid and safety. Trained adults will help them explore friendship and develop new social skills. Songs, skits and activities will help instill values based on Bible prin cipals, said a spokesperson for the event. Kelsie Evans of Heppner was recently awarded a $500 scholarship hy A1A/GGMIT. She is the daughter o f Sue and Wayne Evans. Kelsie’s accomplishments have been plentiful in and out of academics. She intends to double major in Business Marketing, and Management. The scholarship is sponsored by AlA Insurance, the adminis trator fo r health insurance plans fo r wheat growers, and the Grain Growers M em ber ship and Insurance Trust, which oversees the plan. No bid may be withdrawn after the time set for the bid opening, nor before the award of the contract, unless award is delayed for a period exceeding thirty (30) days. Obituaries Velma Helen Phillips Velma Helen Phillips, 92, of Sparks, NV, died June 12, 1995, at Hearthstone of Northern Nevada, Sparks. A native of Hamilton, she was bom December 3, 1902, and had lived in the Reno- Sparks area for the past four years, coming from Heppner. Mrs. Phillips was a home maker. Her husband, Jerry, died in 1978. Surviving are daughter, Jay Sanders of Las Vegas; three grandchild ren ; and four great-grandchildren. No funeral was scheduled. Crem ation was at Fitz- Henry's Funeral Home and Crematory, Carson City, under the direction of Ross, Burke & Knobel Mortuary, Sparks. Private inurnment will be held later. Sam found the balance of be ing a coach to all instead of just a dad to one. Sam seemed to want the Pirates to play and win/lose as a team. We were not sure how the kids would play this year after losing their coach George to cancer. It was a loss I know hit them all hard. Chip made the statement that he wanted to make George proud of himself and the team. I think they did. Thank you again, Sam, for being there for all the kids through all the season.
