Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, February 15, 1995 - FIVE Local delegation travels to Salem A delegation of Morrow County citizens concerned about school funding were allowed audience at a meeting of the state school funding committee in Salem Friday, Feb. 10, at 8:30 a.m. According to George Naims, who is the Heppner Parents Club president and a member of the delegation, Sonja McCabe made arrangements for the audience with the assistance of District 59 State Representative Lynn Lund- quist. "Lynn Lundquist in troduced u s," said Naims. "W e'd like to give him a lot of credit. He was wonderful." Barbara Lundquist, Lynn's wife, was even on hand at the information desk to greet the delegation before the session with the committee. Naims said that they were granted an additional 15 minutes over their 30 minute allocation of time to speak to the committee and were allow ed an hour and 15 minutes for a question-answer period, which is rare. Bill Kuhn provid ed opening remarks; school board member Molly Rill spoke on school funding; Terry Tallman of Boardman spoke on the demographics of Morrow County; three students, Olivia Sagely, Tony Greenup and Phillip SpicerKuhn, gave their personal testimony; and Hepp ner High School teacher and coach Greg Grant gave closing remarks. Grant and Heppner High School principal Steve Dickenson addressed questions during the question-answer period and Bob Sagely also spoke to the committee. Naims said that she felt the meeting went well and was "very positive". " I think they heard u s," said Naims. " I don't know if they understood. But we made a very powerful presentation." Naims said that an aide for Rep. John Schoon, chairman of the committee, contacted Mor row County School Superintendent Chuck Starr following the meeting and told Starr how impressed Schoon was with the Morrow County delegation. Naims said that the commit tee wanted more facts on why it costs the Morrow County School District more to educate a student and encouraged the group to go before the educa tional ways and means commit tee. The delegation plans to do that as soon as they are able to get an audience with them. AirLife building fund half way there Contributions to build Air Life's "new home" for its helicopter and membership services have reached $103,655.54. This half-way point in funding was announc ed by Air Life program manager, Vem Bartley. "M ore than 1100 donors have helped us reach this level," said Bartley. "And response to the ornament depicting Air L ife's new building brought in 621 dona tions of $50 or more. The or naments will be sent as a 'thank you' gift until the remaining stock of about 150 is depleted." Bartley is continuing to make funding request of individuals and foundations to raise the re maining $223,090. Air Life's relocation will be adjacent to the St. Charles Medical Center emergency room helipad and will ac complish several objectives: Eliminate the short flights across the parking lot each time a patient is brought to the St. Charles Emergency Room. W h e a t grinding sem inar in lone A wheat grinding seminar will be held in lone on Satur day, February 25, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Willows Grange Hall. Participants will see how they can grind their own wheat to retain maximum nutritional value and freshness. They will also learn to choose the correct variety of wheat for the job. A variety of kitchen appliances will be demonstrated, such as a Bosch mixer/blender and breadmaker, using freshly ground wheat. Interested people are wel come to attend and sample some of the finished products, including homemade bread and cookies. There is no charge for the demonstration. Finance forum set for wheat § r O W e TS Morrow County wheat growers with questions about operating loans, credit checks and money management op tions are invited to attend an Ag Finance Forum Feb. 27 in lone. Sponsored by the Morrow County Wheat Growers, the program begins at 1 p.m. in the Willows Grange Hall. Guest speakers will include Richard Wood, Bank of Eastern Oregon; Norm Kessler, Inland Empire Bank; and Andy VanderPlatt, Brian Brock and Dawn Peterson from Farm Credit Services. Speakers will also participate in a question and answer session. The program has something for beginning as well as ex perienced farmers, and will cover options for growers whose land will soon be com ing back into production with the current Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) ex pires, said a news release from the Oregon Wheat Growers League.
