Local delegation travels to Salem
A delegation of Morrow
County citizens concerned
about school funding were
allowed audience at a meeting
of the state school funding
committee in Salem Friday,
Feb. 10, at 8:30 a.m.
According to George Naims,
who is the Heppner Parents
Club president and a member
of the delegation, Sonja
McCabe made arrangements
for the audience with the
assistance of District 59 State
Representative Lynn Lund-
quist. "Lynn Lundquist in
troduced u s," said Naims.
"W e'd like to give him a lot of
credit. He was wonderful."
Barbara Lundquist, Lynn's
wife, was even on hand at the
information desk to greet the
delegation before the session
with the committee.
Naims said that they were
granted an additional 15
minutes over their 30 minute
allocation of time to speak to
the committee and were allow
ed an hour and 15 minutes for
a question-answer period,
which is rare. Bill Kuhn provid
ed opening remarks; school
board member Molly Rill spoke
on school funding; Terry
Tallman of Boardman spoke on
the demographics of Morrow
County; three students, Olivia
Sagely, Tony Greenup and
Phillip SpicerKuhn, gave their
personal testimony; and Hepp
ner High School teacher and
coach Greg Grant gave closing
remarks. Grant and Heppner
High School principal Steve
Dickenson addressed questions
during the question-answer
period and Bob Sagely also
spoke to the committee.
Naims said that she felt the
meeting went well and was
"very positive". " I think they
heard u s," said Naims. " I
don't know if they understood.
But we made a very powerful
presentation."
Naims said that an aide for
Rep. John Schoon, chairman of
the committee, contacted Mor
row
County
School
Superintendent Chuck Starr
following the meeting and told
Starr how impressed Schoon
was with the Morrow County
delegation.
Naims said that the commit
tee wanted more facts on why
it costs the Morrow County
School District more to educate
a student and encouraged the
group to go before the educa
tional ways and means commit
tee. The delegation plans to do
that as soon as they are able to
get an audience with them.
