Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, December 14, 1994 - THREE Youth basketball clinic planned A youth basketball clinic will be held at Heppner High School Tuesday, Dec. 27, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. for Heppner area Colt basketball players. Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 28 and 29, the clinic will feature 7th and 8th graders from Heppner and area schools in competitive play. The clinic for Colt players is free. The fee for the clinic for the 7th and 8th graders is $10. Gene Heliker, Heppner alum from San Diego, will direct the clinic with assistance from Heppner coaches, fans and high school players. A special banquet Friday evening, Dec. 29, beginning at 8 p.m. at the Heppner Elks Club, will honor Heppner graduates who served in Viet nam. Proceeds from the youth clinic will go toward the David Clark banquet. The remainder will go back into the alumni fund. Organizer Stuart Dick says that help is needed to locate Vietnam veterans. Heideman was chosen first team defensive lineman for both All State and Big Sky teams and Big Sky second team offensive center; Ashbeck was selected All State and Big Sky first team defensive line backer and Big Sky honorable mention running back; and Holtz was named All State and Big Sky first team offensive end and Big Sky second team defensive back. Joe Bacon was selected Big Sky second team offensive guard. Honorable mention went to Marc Orem, end, and Luke Swanson, quarterback. The 1A All Star football game will be played June 17 at LaGrande. ,vV".-,.. , Photo by Joyce Hughes Dan Burnside grabs a rebound for the Mustangs It looked like the start of a blowout when the Riverside Pirates jumped on top of Hepp ner 12-4 in the first quarter, last Saturday night Dec. 10 in Heppner. But a strong third period pulled it out for the Mustangs who came away with a 49-40 win over their cross county rivals. The Pirates' 6 foot nine-inch center Aaron Keizur racked up _____ _ __ ^ 15 seven of his o game-high points in the first quarter, but the Mustang defense toughen- ed up, holding Keizur's scoring down for the remainder of the game. The Mustang offense came aijve jn the third period when Heppner litt up the scoreboard 20 points to Riverside's eight, putting the Mustangs up for the first time, 34-31. Heppner's leading scorer, Trent Hughes, popped in two three pointers, and Chris Sykes added six points in the third to lead the scoring surge. Hughes ended with a total of 12 points and Sykes with 10. Other scoring totals were: Eric Schonbachler 9; Brent Wright 6; Chris Dickenson 5; Dan Burnside 3; and Chad Skroch and Shawn Hisler 2 each. The Mustangs continue with non-league play Friday when they face off against the Mac- High Pioneers at home, and then travel to Riverside Satur day, and back at home against lone next Tuesday.
