Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, December 7, 1994 - THREE Jason Halvorsen's jersey retired Mustangs down lone 57-55, Fillies lose By Anne Morter A moment of silence was observed before the start of the lone versus Heppner boy's var sity basketball game last Satur day, Dec. 3 in lone, as Jason Halvorsen's basketball jersey was retired. Long time basketball coach Del LaRue, announced that number 44 would be retired in honor of Jason Halvorsen, who was tragically killed in an auto accident last spring. The jersey will be placed in a new trophy case being built in Jason's honor. Senior guard Trent Hughes scored 25 points to lead the Heppner Mustangs to a 57-55 season opening win over lone in non-league action Saturday night Dec. 3. The visiting Mustangs grabb ed the lead early and had the Cardinals down 18-6 at the end of the first quarter, but the Cards pulled to within four at the end of the half. By the end of the third quarter the scrappy Cardinals, behind the scoring of exchange student Thierry Delbart, who fouled out of the game with 20 points under his belt, had jumped ahead of Heppner 46-41. The lead d id n't hold, however, as senior guard Chris Dickenson chipped in six of his nine points in the fourth, and along with Hughes' totals pull ed ahead of the Cards to win by 57-55. Besides Delbart's 20, the Cards also got good production from Sophmore Luke Swan son, who popped in 14 points, including three 3-point shots. W illow Creek Baptist to host musical Willow Creek Baptist Church will host the adult and children's choirs from Richland Baptist Church on Saturday, Dec. 17, at 6 p.m., at the Seventh-D ay Adventist Church, 560 Minor in Heppner. The choirs will present the Christmas musical, "B e th lehem's Star. The community is invited to attend. There is no admission charge. Refreshments will follow the program. Grains Commission plans meeting The Oregon Grains Commis sion will hold a regular meeting on Thursday, Dec. 15 beginn ing at 8:30 a.m. at the OWC Conference room, located at 1200 NW Front Ave., Suite 520, Portland. The Fillies lost their season opener to the Cardinals 49-52. Kelsie Evans led all scorers with 25 points while Suzy Heideman scored 17 to give the Cardinals the win. Char Coe chipped in 11 for the Fillies. Services planned at H ope, Valby "And the Prophets Foretold" is the theme of the mid week advent services held at Hope and Valby Lutheran churches during the Advent season. This week the congregation wjll hear a word from the prophet Jeremiah. Services at Valby are Wednesday evening beginning at 7 p.m. Hope Lutheran church will gather on Thursday Dec. 8 at 6 p.m. for a soup and sandwich supper with the worship ser vice to follow at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, the con gregation will have a soup sup per at 6 p.m. and then go Christmas caroling around Heppner. Others may elect to stay and help decorate the Christmas tree. This Sunday, Dec. 11, the third Sunday in Advent, the congregations of Hope and Valby will hear a note of good news from the Old Testament prophet Zephaniah as Pastor Stan Hoobing will bring a message entitled "Advent pf our Lord". Services aré at 9 a.m. at Valby and 11 a.m. at Hope. Visitors are welcome to the worship services and events at both churches.
