Allison Sullivan was 100 percent on 17 serves, Becky Wagenblast was 100 percent on 16 and Mary Jane McCarty missed just one of her 15 tries to lead the Cards in scoring. Back row leaders were Melissa McElligott with 95 per cent on serve receives, Sullivan with 86 percent and Kim Bedor- tha with 81 percent. Suzie Heideman led the team to 88 percent blocking with 10-11 blocking with four stuffs. Sullivan was 9-11 blocking with two stuffs and McElligott and Jessica Stefani had one stuff each. Wagenblast had 42 assists and McCarty had 32 as the team tallied a 99 percent suc cess rate in setting. At the net the lady Cards peppered the Rangers with 101 hits in the game, missing ju st 12. McElligott led with five kills and Wagenblast, Heideman and Sullivan each tallied one. Coach McElligott was happy with the win over Dufur, the number two-ranked team in the last Class 1A poll. After slugging it out with Dufur, the number one team from the West Division and a team that the Cardinals had previously lost to in non conference play, emerged the District Champions with a 12-15, 15-8, 16-6 win. The emotianally charged matched took one hour and 45 minutes to play with the con ference's number one seeding at the State Tournament on the line. "Tentative” and "nervous” described the lady Cards in the first game as they struggled to pick up Dufur's hard serves and spikes. They had trouble passing and hitting in the ear ly going. The team went through a full rotation before getting on the scoreboard. The Cards were whistled several times for net fouls before settl ing down and playing their usual game. By that time, though, it was too late to catch the Rangers. The second game started out much the same way with Dufur taking the early lead 3-0. lone responded with a six point run to take control of the game. The Cards made their presence known at the net with strong blocking. "O ur blocks rattled them ,” said coach Charity McElligott. "It threw them off mentally, ” she added. She also noted that the team did a much better job returning Dufur's hits. In the third game, with the championship in sight, the Cards started strong and Construction will begin on Black Horse Canyon Bridge and Bunker Hill (Terry Thompson) Bridge in mid November, and continue through February, 1995. Cards end season with perfect 10-0 record By Anne Morter The lone lady Cardinals finished the league season with a perfect 10-0 record, defeating Helix 15-8 on Tuesday, November 1. Kim Bedortha led in scoring with 10 points on 10 of 10 serving. Mary Jane McCarty scored nine points on perfect nine for nine serving. The pat was no good and the Mustangs trailed 6-0. Sophomore Casey Perkins hit Thomas Grimes with a nine yard scoring pass to put Weston-McEwen up 12-0 with 3:15 left in the first quarter. Defensive back Curt Sloan in tercepted the Mustangs on the next possession and returned it to the Heppner 20 yard line where Perkins hit tight end Matt Bailey for the score. Perkins hit Sloan for a 16 yard touchdown pass to make the score 26-0 midway through the third quarter. The Mustangs finally got on the board with a scoring drive of 60 yards. Quarterback Brian Koffler hit Brent Wright with completions of 13 and 25 yards to set up a three yard touch down run by senior Chris Dickenson. Koffler and Wright teamed up for the pat to make the final score 26-8.
