TWO - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, September 14, 1994 Mustangs beat cross-county rivals 1994 Heppner High School Homecoming Court-Homecoming was held early this year for Heppner High School students. The week started out Tuesday, Sept. 6 being ‘50’s/‘60’s day; Wednesday was teacher look-a-like; Thursday was Pirate day with a volleyball game against Riverside and Friday was Blue and Gold day. The evening ended with the Mustangs beating the Pirates 13-10 in a come from behind game. During halftime the court was crowned. Lexi Matteson, Heppner, is a new junior member of the American Angus Association, reports Dick Spader, exectuive vice president of the national organization with headquarters in St. Joseph, Missouri. Junior members of the association are eligible to register cattle in the American Angus Association and take part in association-sponsored shows and other national and regional events. The game, played at the Morrow County Fair grounds in Heppner, was a car bon copy of the previous week with the Mustangs falling behind early and then stiffen ing their defense and scoring enough to pull out the win. The Pirates opened the game with a 55 yard scoring drive to start the game. The big play in the drive was a 28 yard comple tion from quarterback Kip Mor ris to tight end Seth Wheeler. The drive stalled at the Mustang 14 yard line and Mor ris booted a 30 yard field goal with 7:36 left in the first quarter. The Pirates led 3-0. Wheeler intercepted senior quarterback Chad Skroch on the Mustangs' first play from scrimmage and Riverside took over on Heppner's 16 yard line. Senior running back Justin Trader scored from two yards out. He gained nv yards on in plays on the evening. Morris kicked the pat for a 10-0 Pirate lead. Heppner punted and fumbl ed away their next two posses sions and the Pirates got nothing out of a 12 play drive that ate up most of the second quarter. The Mustangs made the most of their last possession in the first half. Sophomore quarter back Brian Koffler entered the game in the middle of the se cond quarter and moved the Mustangs 85 yards on 12 plays to score with only 13 seconds left in the first half. Koffler hit senior Brent Wright with a 15 yard pass for the score. The Pat was scuttled by a bad snap and Heppner trailed 10-6 at the half. Big plays in the last second drive were a 34 yard run by junior Shaun Hisler and pass completions of 11 yards from Koffler to Wright and 16 yards from Koffler to Chris Dicken- Marriage Licenses The Morrow County Clerk's office at the courthouse in Heppner reports issuing the following marriage licenses during the past week: August 30: Joe Arnold Valdez, 34, Kennewick, WA.; and Angie Lee Rudisill, 23, Ken newick, WA. Hisler had another good game running the ball with 107 yards on 18 carries. Heppner took up where they left off with a scoring drive to start the second half. The 56 yard eight play drive was aid ed by two unsportsmen like conduct penalties called on the Pirates. Hisler and Dickenson packed the ball down the field and Koffler scored from the one yard line with a sneak. Jon Hanna added the pat after a procedure penalty and Hepp ner led 13-10 Riverside shot themselves in the foot several times with fumbles and interceptions in the third and fourth quarter as the Mustang defense stopped the Pirates cold. Hanna anchored the Mustangs run defense and Dickenson, Hisler and sophomore Eric Schonbachler led all tacklers in the secondary. Riverside had one last gasp late in the fourth quarter but Morris' 48 yard field goal fell short and the Mustangs ran the clock out against the pirates. Heppner finishes their non league schedule traveling to Elgin, Friday, Sept. 16 to face the Huskies. Game time is 7 p.m. Elgin, a perennial Wapati league powerhouse was beaten by the Weston-McEwen Tigerscots, 48-20 in their first game of the season. Twenty-nine came to play in the four-man scramble- barbecue held at the Willow Creek Country Club Sunday, Sept. 11. 1st place was a tie between Earl and Carol Morris and Gene and Luvilla Sonstegard, and Howard and Helen Gilliam and Jim and Cam Wishart. 3rd place was Ed and Marilee Hiemstra and Randy and Ber nice Lott.
