The Heppner Mustangs con
tinued their winning ways in
this early season with a 13-10
Win over cross county rival, the
Riverside Pirates last Friday,
Sept. 9. The game, played at
the Morrow County Fair
grounds in Heppner, was a car
bon copy of the previous week
with the Mustangs falling
behind early and then stiffen
ing their defense and scoring
enough to pull out the win.
The Pirates opened the game
with a 55 yard scoring drive to
start the game. The big play in
the drive was a 28 yard comple
tion from quarterback Kip Mor
ris to tight end Seth Wheeler.
The drive stalled at the
Mustang 14 yard line and Mor
ris booted a 30 yard field goal
with 7:36 left in the first
quarter. The Pirates led 3-0.
Wheeler intercepted senior
quarterback Chad Skroch on
the Mustangs' first play from
scrimmage and Riverside took
over on Heppner's 16 yard line.
Senior running back Justin
Trader scored from two yards
out. He gained nv yards on in
plays on the evening. Morris
kicked the pat for a 10-0 Pirate
lead.
Heppner punted and fumbl
ed away their next two posses
sions and the Pirates got
nothing out of a 12 play drive
that ate up most of the second
quarter.
The Mustangs made the most
of their last possession in the
first half. Sophomore quarter
back Brian Koffler entered the
game in the middle of the se
cond quarter and moved the
Mustangs 85 yards on 12 plays
to score with only 13 seconds
left in the first half. Koffler hit
senior Brent Wright with a 15
yard pass for the score. The Pat
was scuttled by a bad snap and
Heppner trailed 10-6 at the half.
Big plays in the last second
drive were a 34 yard run by
junior Shaun Hisler and pass
completions of 11 yards from
Koffler to Wright and 16 yards
from Koffler to Chris Dicken-

son. Hisler had another good
game running the ball with 107
yards on 18 carries.
Heppner took up where they
left off with a scoring drive to
start the second half. The 56
yard eight play drive was aid
ed by two unsportsmen like
conduct penalties called on the
Pirates. Hisler and Dickenson
packed the ball down the field

yard line with a sneak. Jon
