Jan. 21 and a not so easy win over Wheeler on the road Saturday. Jan. 22. Their season record im proves to 11-3 with the pair o f wins. The lady Cards showed some solid teamwork as they raced to a 19-5 first quarter lead over the visiting Helix Grizzlies and then coasted home to a 66-36 win. Jamie Lovett led all scorers with 18 points and Melissa M cElligott chipped in 14. The Cards grabbed a 39-34 reboun ding advantage led by freshman Suzie Heideman w ith 10. Heideman also led the team in steals with four. The lady Car dinals had 20 assists in the game. Mary Jane McCarty, Becky Wagenblast and McElligott each had five. In the shooting depart ment, lone connected on 27 o f 60 shots for the field for 45 per cent. At the line, they had their best effort o f the season, mak ing I I o f 16 for 69 percent. Helix shot 13 o f 59 for 22 per cent from the floor and 10 o f 18 for 55 percent from the line. “ I was happy with how the girls passed the ball around." com m ented coach Dana Heideman. Cards beat Wheeler in tough game By A nne M orter The lady Cardinals almost proved to be their own undoing on Saturday Jan. 22 when they beat the Falcons 51-29 in the Wheeler gym. historically a d if ficult place to win for lone. Jamie Lovett, the team's second leading scorer spent much o f the game in foul trouble, and the team's third highest scorer, April Taylor, had trouble finding the basket in the early going. The Cards led 8-7 at the end o f the first quarter and 23-14 at the half. The Falcons were within seven at the end o f the third period before the lady Cards finally got rolling. A 22 point final period for the Cards led to a 51-29 victory. “ I knew it would hit sooner or la t e r , " said coach Dana Heideman o f the Cards cold shooting night. He noted another problem was the lady Cardinals inability to execute against Wheeler's zone defense. A pril Taylor was high scorer with 13 points, the majority coming in the fourth quarter. Suzie Heideman and Jamie Lovett each added 12. Heideman led with 10 re bounds as the Cards out re bounded Wheeler by a slim one board margin. 31-30. “ Suzie did a good job on the boards. She kept us in the game.” com mented coach Heideman. A pril Taylor had six o f the team's 12 assists and Mary Jane McCarty had five steals in the game. The Cards ended up shooting 35 percent for the game. Fifty percent shooting in the fourth quarter helped bring up the dismal averages o f the first and third quarters. At the line, they made just nine o f 22 for 4 1 per cent. Wheeler had shooting troubles o f its own, making 13 o f 43 for 30 percent from the field and two o f 10 for 20 per cent from the line. Coach Heideman was glad to leave Fossil w ith a w in . “ Everytime I play there and come out with a win. I feel pretty good.” he said, noting that this was just the second win he has recorded in that gym during his coaching stint with the lady Cards. This weekend lone travels to Echo on Friday Jan. 28 and By A nne M orter The lone lady Cardinals kick ed o ff league play last weekend with two wins, beating Condon 74-53 on the road Friday, Jan. 14 and hosting Arlington on Satur day, Jan. 15. Although coach Dana Heideman had a few qualms about the defensive play, he couldn't complain about the offense, which scored over 70 points on both nights. The inside game o f the lady Cardinals was the "determ ining factor” in the win against Con don according to Heideman. Added to 62 percent shooting from the field, the Cardinals put away the Blue Devils after a slow first quarter. Tawna Shannon o f Condon led all scorers with 23 points, in cluding four three-pointers. For the Cards, Jamie Lovett topped the scoring with 20 points on 10 of 14 shooting. M elissa McElligott added 17, missing on ly four o f her 10 shots. The lady Cards dominated the boards 37-18 and had nine assists to zero for Condon. M cElligott led with three. The red hot Cardinals shot 30 o f 48 for a season high 62 per cent. At the line, they connected on 12 o f 20 for 60 percent. Con don made 18 o f 58 for 37 percent from the floor and 13 o f 19 for 68 percent from the field. "W e handled the ball well. We handled their pressure and mov ed the ball w e ll,” commented Heideman. "W e were a little weak in the defensive department but other than that, we played pretty w e ll.” Photo by Wayne Hams April Taylor (24) shoots for two points Spaghetti dinner planned at lone The lone Booster Club w ill hold a spaghetti dinner Saturday, Jan. 29, in the lone school cafeteria from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. during the lone-Condon basket ball game. The menu w ill include spaghet ti, salad, and French bread. Cost w ill be $4 fo r adults. $2.50 for children six and under or $ 15 for a family. Proceeds w ill benefit the lone Booster Club. Cards put away pesky Helix team for 45 percent. Helix connected on 26 o f 65 shots from the field for 40 percent and eight o f 16 for 50 percent from the line. LaRue was glad to get the Helix game out o f the way since Helix is one o f the top teams on this side o f the league. 4-H News Ewes R Us By Kathleen Greenup, Reporter The Ewes R Us 4-H Club held their first meeting in 1994 on January 18 at Kate’s Pizza Parlor, Heppner. Election o f officers was held. The new officers are Char Coe, president; Shelly Ashbeck, vice president; Mandy Gutierrez, secretary; Kathleen Greenup, reporter. "W e w ill have to play well to beat those teams.” Games start at 4:30 p.m. on Friday and I p.m. Saturday. lone Garden Club discus garden plans “ Color in Your Garden” led by Jean Nelson, was the subject o f discussuion at the January 12 lone Garden Club meeting. The meeting was held at the home o f Delta Huber with Elsie Huston as hostess. It was pointed out that there are many things to consider when buying plants for the garden. In selecting plants one must consider not only the colors but also the sun or shade needed, the foliage, how to maintain con tinual bloom in all seasons and the continual care involved to keep the plants healthy. A list o f plants and plans o f your garden can be a great help when one goes to the nursery to purchase new plants. Nelson said. Pat Pettyjohn reported that she had contacted lone Elementary School children in first through fifth grade, encouraging them to participate in the poster contest honoring Smokey the Bear on his 50th anniversary. She gave each o f the 69 children a litter bag, pencil and kerchief w ith a Smokey Bear emblem on it. En tries w ill be judged in mid February. The first place winner in each grade w ill be sent to District #10 for competition. Also during the meeting the group voted to donate to Willamette National and Eagle Point Cemeteries, Leach Gardens and W orlding Gardening. A memorial donation w ill be sent to the Claire Hanley Scholarship Fund in memory o f Esther Dobyns, a former member. On Friday night. Jan. 21 they put away a pesky Helix team 84-61 in lone and survived a s tiff challenge in Fossil on Saturday. Jan. 22. The Cardinals went to work early against Helix, jumping out to an early 25-6 lead but Helix didn't roll over. In the last three minutes o f the first quarter, the Grizzlies outscored the Cards 12-6 to pull within 13, 31-18. At halftime, lone led 44-33 but Helix pulled to within eight a couple o f times in the third quarter before the Cards put on another little spurt. The final The Sassy Sewers 4-H club met pn January 21, 1994 at Amy Drake's house. The members in the club are Macy Rhea, Brooke Boyer and Amy Drake. The leader is Carley Drake. Members practiced putting in zippers, darts, gathers and buttonholes. Members also went over infor mation found on patterns.
