Thirty-eight 4-H members, junior leaders, leaders and parents gathered at Morrow County Fairgrounds on Saturday, June 12 for the 4-H Home Economics and Expressive Arts Pre-Fair. Maci Childers opened the pro gram with the Pledge o f Allegiance and the 4-H Pledge. Carol Michael-Bennett explained 4-H registration for fair exhibits, general 4-H rules and Danish System Judging. Traci Dickenson and Mandi Gutierrez demonstrated the inter view judging process. Maci and Bobbi Childers and Andrea Mesteth and Gladys Hobbs shared tips for preparing a supp ly box for fair contests. Monica Swanson pointed out features of the fairgrounds to new 4-H parents and leaders. Tonia Adams and Carley Drake registered participants. served snacks and prepared cer tificates of participation. Barbara Wetherall explained the prin cipals of judging contests. Heather Ennis, Mandi Gutier rez and Traci Dickenson taught modeling steps and poses that will be used in “ Fashion Revue” and “ My Favorite Outfit” contests. Bobbi Childers and Glaya Baker shared tips for preparing food exhibits. Participants included: Katie Bacon, Marcy Bacon, Molly Bar- rows, Erin Crowell, Charissa Gates, Allison Halvorsen, Jen nifer Thompson and Adrienne Swanson of lone; Amy Drake, Danielle McDowell, Merilee McDowell, Trisha Adams, Kristi Worden, Molly and Macy Rhea of Heppner; Cheryl Hobbs, Ir- rigon; Kevin and Keith Baker, Heather Ennis, Jenny Harrell, Kayla Downey, Sara Fritz and Shannon Wetherall of Boardmn. North Lex club attends show By Anne Morter Four members of the North Lex Livestock club attended the Tygh Valley Livestock show June 3-6, sponsored by the Oregon Wheat Grower’s League. Jessica and Shelby Krebs and Luke and Adrienne Swanson showed their market hogs in various competitions, including confirmation and showmanship. The girls also competed in the judging and herdsm anship competition. Adult leader. Maureen Krebs, reported that the local competitors did well, especially with two of the girls showing animals for the first time. She said that the weather was less than ideal, with “ buckets” of rain and lots of mud, but the kids had a good time and did well in all the classes. The Krebs camped in one of their ranches’ “ sheep camps” , a homemade travel trailer of sorts used in sheep camps. She noted that their lodgings turned into quite the conversation piece with numerous people stopping by to take a peak. The show, which is an annual event, drew competitors from all over the state. Wranglers to hold trail ride The Wranglers Riding Club will have their annual trail ride Sunday, June 20. The ride will start at 10:30 a.m. at the base of Madison Butte Road and end at Tupper Corrals. The ride will take approximately 4 Vi hours. To reach the starting point riders should go to Anson Wright Park and turn left. There will be signs pointing the rest of the way. It takes approximately one hour to reach the starting point. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be barbecued at 3 p.m. Everyone attending should bring a salad or dessert. Drinks will be provided. The cost is $5 per person or $15 per family. Everyone is invited to attend the barbecue even if they don’t ride. It is recommended that the horses have shoes and that horses and riders have bug repellant. Riders should also pack water bottles. The Wranglers Riding Club has announced that Friday night playdays have been cancelled due to lack of interest. Potato growers announce scholarships Nursing home gets new resident The Blue Mountain Potato Growers have announced that they will award two $1,000 scholarships for college students. “ We really feel proud of our roots,” said Tyler Hansell of the group’s scholarship committee. “ The hard working families of this region have built a multi million dollar regional industry around the Blue Mountain Potato and we want to have a way to show that pride.” Hansell also said that the potato growers are concerned about the “ brain drain” of the area young people and want to encourage them to stay in Oregon and in the potato industry. Minster receives scholarships “ Those that love her, really love her. They like her when she’s quiet,” said Jones. She said the kitten sleeps in the residents’ arms and plays at night. “ The staff is enjoying her as much as the residents,” added Jones. She said that the staff has been pick ing up toys for the kitten. “ They’re really spoiling her.” Jones said that the nursing home had been working on get ting a pet for the last year. 3k Heppner Elks 358 j ■»^676-9181 142 N. The oldest Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home resident Sarah Adkins, 98, takes time to cuddle the youngest, a seven-week old cat, Joy. The nursing home adopted the Manx kitten about two weeks ago. Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home Ladies Auxilary provides all the costs in raising a cat. Tonya Jones, activities direc tor, says that most of the residents are really enjoying the kitten. HAPPY FATHER’S DAY Father's Day is Sunday June 20 Crystal Minster By Anne Morter lone High School’s valedic torian, Crystal Minster, walked away with a wheelbarrow full of scholarships at last week’s com mencement exercises in lone June 4. M inster was aw arded a scholarship from G onzaga University, the college she will be attending in the fall. She also was a recipient of the Troedson Scholarship, the South Morrow County Scholarship, the OSEA scholarship, the Elks Scholarship, the Cardinal Club and the American Legion scholarships. Minster was awarded additional funds from Dr. Carpenter, ARC, the Ken Snider Memorial, the Mike Matthews Memorial, the FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) and the Soroptimist. She was also awarded a tuition waiver from Blue Mountain Community College based on her valedictorian status. Ryan Halvorsen was also awarded a waiver to BMCC. He received the Troedson, South Morrow County, Elks and Mike Matthews scholarships. David Wagenblast, the class salutatorian, was awarded a BMCC tuition waiver, the Mor row County Education Associa tion award, a Troedson scholar- thip, the South Morrow County and the Lions Club scholarships. Justin Miller was awarded the C lass o f 1968 M emorial Scholarship. Tony Bjerke was awarded the Pat Gillette scholarship and Erika Bergstrom was awarded an FBLA award. lone graduated 12 seniors in the ceremony held last Friday evening.
