The top two finishers in each event ad vance to the State 1A meet to be held Saturday, May 22 at Western Oregon State College in Monmouth. Melissa McElligott was a tri ple winner as well as handling a leg on the school-record breaking 1600-relay team. She won the tri ple jump with a leap of 31 ’ 101/2 ” the long jump in 15’*4” and the 100 meter in 13.26 sec. She teamed with Crystal Minster, A pril Taylor and Becky Wagenblast to lower the school long relay record to 4:34,65. Jamie Lovett set a school record in the discus, winning it with a throw of 109’4 ” . She was also fourth in the shot with a throw of 30’4 Vi ’' and fifth in the 200 in 33.31. The Mustangs won their first game over the Wasco County Redsides but then went into a slump as they lost to Grant Union, Dufur, Riverside and the Pendleton J.V . teams in pre-season. League play began for the Mustangs as they defeated the Stanfield Tigers twice in a doubleheader. The Mustangs then posted nine straight victories in a row for a perfect 9-0 league record. The victory over the Umatilla Vikings assured the Mustangs a first place standing. Heppner hammered the Pilot Rock Rockets 18-0 and 13-1 last Saturday, May 8 in Pilot Rock in a doubleheader. The Heppner boys track team brought home the second place trophy by dominating in the field events at the district meet held last weekend in Umatilla. Channel 14 open for trial viewing The Heppner T.V. Inc. Board of directors has announced that Channel 14 on the cable system is on. The Learning Channel was broadcast on a trial basis for about two weeks and the Si-Fi channel (Science Fiction) is now the shutout as the game was call ed after five innings on the 10 run rule. Wicklund has been a key in gredient for the Mustang success as he has held the pitching staff together. Sumner led the Mustang of fense in the first game as he went four for four at the plate to lead the Mustangs’ win. The Rockets could only manage one hit and five errors led to the Rocket downfall. The second game began the same as the first as the Mustangs jumped out to a 10-0 lead after two innings with Jim Tellechea pitching. Chris Dicken son came in the game and allow ed Pilot Rock their only run of the day, but it didn't matter as the Mustangs rolled to a 13-1 win.
