Morrow County registered voters will be receiving a mail- in ballot from the county clerk’s office this week. Voters will have until 8 p.m. March 23, to mark their ballots and get them back to the clerk’s office. At stake are funds for con tinued county services that for the most part will be identical to the last year. Morrow County operates on a fiscal year which begins July 1 and ends June 30 of the following year. Two operating levies will be voted on, the county one-year operating levy and the county one-year medical levy. Mustangs and Fillies A pep assembly will be held for the Heppner Mustangs and Fillies on Friday, March 5 at 8:35 a.m. at the Heppner High School gym. Photo by Judy Barber By Jeremy Maddern The Heppner Fillies avenged their only two losses of the season as they finally beat the Sherman Union Huskies 54-38 at the District 7-2A tournament this last weekend. The Fillies earned the top seed at the Regional Tourna ment this weekend in LaGrande. With the win the Fillies will play the Vale Vikings for a spot in the state tournament March 11-13. The Fillies will play at Eastern Oregon State College on Friday, March 5 at 7 p.m. The Heppner Mustangs lost to the Weston-McEwen TigerScots 66-62 in a shocker as the TigerScots escaped with a close win and the District 7-2A cham pionship last Saturday, Feb. 27 at Area hospice volunteers needed A training session on hospice care is being planned in Heppner at the Columbia Basin Con ference room beginning Tuesday, April 6 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. The training consists of seven sessions to be held weekly and is for peo ple who would like to learn more about hospice and have an interest in becoming a hospice volunteer. Who Pay« tha Taxa« In Morrow County The combination of the two operating levies that the voters will give, thumbs up or thumbs down will be a $39,277 increase over last year’s levies or less than one percent increase over the past five years. Judge Carlson said that instruc tions to all departments and tax ing agencies were to have a no in crease levy to submit to the voters, but the budget committee. Included in the county one year levy are dollars that support such services as county administration, health department, museum, roads, parks, senior services. Ac cording to Oregon law this amount may grow by six percent each year without approval of the voters. The H eppner Fillie and Mustang basketball teams travel to LaGrande Friday to begin play in the 2A Regional basketball tournament. The boys play first taking on Vale at 3 p.m. Friday. The girls also play Vale at 7 p.m. All games are played at Quinn Col- isium on the Eastern Oregon Col lege campus. If the girls win their game they will advance to the state palyoffs without playing another game. If they lose the girls will play Satur day at 1:30 p.m. If the boys team wins they will play again at 3 p.m. Saturday. The boys must win both games to advance to state. A lose in either game eliminates them from the tournament. Admission to the games is $4 for adults and $3 for students Find The Hidden Shamrock Win Silver Medallions This week a new St. Patrick’s Day activity begins. Each week until March 10 a clue for the St. Patrick’s Day treasure hunt will be printed in the Gazette-Times. If followed these clues will guide treasure hunters to a green plastic shamrock, hidden somewhere in the city limits of Heppner. The first person to find the hidden shamrock will win a set of pure silver Oregon Trail commemorative medallions, worth near ly $90. The coins are donated by the Bank of Eastern Oregon and are on display at the bank. Resolution passed to disburse landfill monies The Morrow County court Feb. 24 passed a resolution to disburse the monies generated from the Finley Buttes Landfill license fee. The fee is paid by Finley Buttes Landfill company to Morrow County for each ton of landfill received at the landfill site. Fifty percent of the monies will be divided equally among the five communities in the county- Heppner, Boardman, Irrigon. Lexington and lone. Another 40 percent will be divided among the communities according to the percent of registered voters. The remaining 10 percent will go in to the county’s discretionary fund for economic development. Referring to criticism that the monies should be divided based on population. Morrow County Judge Louis Carlson said that the State of Oregon and the census bureau are unable to supply that information. He stressed that while the plan “ is not perfect" it can be perfected in the future if the communities deem it necessary. He added that while “ it has been extremely difficult for the county to give away money, it will be equally as difficult for the communities to develop their plans and priorities and to invest these dollars in such a manner that it presents an opportunity for the community as opposed to a divisive wedge.” The plan to disburse the monies will include provisions for a Mor row County Coordinating Com mittee, composed of the three county commissioners, and a representative of each of the five Morrow County communities. Also required is a community coordinating council from each community which will be com prised of five registered voters residing within the community, one of whom is a current member of the city council or a designee of the city council. The resolution also calls for a community development plan, listing long and short-term goals. The hidden shamrock is not on private property, and no digging or moving of objects, dirt or other material is necessary to find the shamrock. 4. Ballots must be returned by 8 p.m. on March 23. Bloodsworth says that the return envelope may require more than one stamp.
