Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, February 17, 1993 Mustangs survive Huskies’ scare Cardinals lose to Condon but stay No. 1 By Jeremy Maddern The Heppner Mustangs surviv ed a scare from lowly Sherman Union as they barely pulled out a 48-46 win last Saturday, Feb. 13 in Heppner. The Huskies had a moral victory over the power ful Mustangs. The Huskies stayed within reaching distance from the lead after the first quarter of play was over. Heppner had a four point lead and looked as they were go ing to run away with the game after a big second quarter. The Mustangs enjoyed an 11 point lead heading into the half. The Sherman Union Huskies scrapped back into the game as they actually outscored the CBC leaders 12-10 to keep themselves w ithin distance of the lead, only trailing by nine at the end of the third quarter. The Mustangs seemed to fall apart as they saw a more motivated Huskie team battle back behind three three-pointers late within the fourth quarter. The Mustangs are still setting the pace in the CBC w ith a 10-0 record in league play and a 13-3 overall record. The Mustangs play host to Umatilla on Thursday, Feb. 18 and travel to Weston-McEwen on Friday to take on the TigerScots in the final game of the regular season. Huskies blemish Fillies’ record By Jeremy Maddern The Heppner Fillies are now in a tie for second place in the Col umbia Basin Conference league standing with a 44-41 loss to the Sherman Union Huskies last Saturday. Feb. 13 on the Fillies' home court. The Huskies are the only team that has blemished the Fillies’ record with two losses. Heppner and Sherman battled back and fourth throughout the whole game. It was neck and neck as defense played an impor tant role and it showed as both teams were knotted up at eight points each after a quarter of play. The Fillies looked intent on winning as they rode the hot shooting of Jodi Johnston in the second quarter as she scored eight of her 15 points taking the girls into the locker room w ith a 23-19 lead. March 4. 1993 - 7:30 p .m .4 ^ i Cardinals sizzle, defeat Cascade Locks By Anne Morter Six seniors, Justin Miller, David W agenblast, Deacon Heideman, Ryan Halvorsen, Mac Lovett and Tony Bjerke, played their last home game to a packed house on Friday, Feb. 12 but the end result wasn’t quite what they had in mind. The Cardinals took a disappointing loss to the Blue Devils 52-47. Condon seemed in tent on not letting the Cards get away from them by slowing the pace of the game a bit and turn ing on the defensive pressure. The Cards led 14-13 at the end of one but trailed 23-29 at the half. In the third quarter, they held Condon to just one field goal and pulled back to a 35 33 lead. But in the fourth quarter, the Blue Devils canned nine of their 13 free throw attempts as the Car dinals continued to have trouble getting their shots to fall, and Condon came away with the 52-47 win. Tony Bjerke was the only Card in double figures with 10 points. The Cards were hurt on the boards, where Condon out re bounded them 35-31. Aaron Heideman paced the Cardinals with 10, followed by Deacon Heideman with six. Deacon Heideman also had four blocked shots and Jason Halvorsen add ed three. David Wagenblast handed out six assists and Jim Logan grabbed five steals in the game. In the second half though, the Car dinals settled down and got back into their own game and ran off with the 95-54 victory. Deacon Heideman was the game’s high scorer with 16 points. He also had 10 rebounds and three blocked shots. Justin Miller hit three treys and ended the game with 15 points, and Ryan Halvorsen chipped in with 14. The Cards dominated the boards 68-25, led by Jared" Ashbeck with 11 and Heideman and Tony Bjerke with 10 each. There were plenty of assists to go around with David Wagenblast and Ashbeck each tallying four and Jim Logan, Jake Bacon and Ryan Halvorsen each con tributing three. The Cards improved their shooting, making 38 of 85 for 45 percent from the floor and 14 of 22 for 64 percent from the fine.
