Mustangs survive Huskies’ scare Cardinals lose to Condon but stay No. 1
By Jeremy Maddern
The Heppner Mustangs surviv
ed a scare from lowly Sherman
Union as they barely pulled out
a 48-46 win last Saturday, Feb.
13 in Heppner. The Huskies had
a moral victory over the power
ful Mustangs.
The Huskies stayed within
reaching distance from the lead
after the first quarter of play was
over. Heppner had a four point
lead and looked as they were go
ing to run away with the game
after a big second quarter. The
Mustangs enjoyed an 11 point
lead heading into the half.
The Sherman Union Huskies
scrapped back into the game as
they actually outscored the CBC
leaders 12-10 to keep themselves
w ithin distance of the lead, only
trailing by nine at the end of the
third quarter.
The Mustangs seemed to fall
apart as they saw a more
motivated Huskie team battle
back behind three three-pointers
late within the fourth quarter. The
Mustangs were not about to let
the lead get away as they held on
for the win.

Huskies blemish Fillies’ record
By Jeremy Maddern
The Heppner Fillies are now in
a tie for second place in the Col
umbia Basin Conference league
standing with a 44-41 loss to the
Sherman Union Huskies last
Saturday. Feb. 13 on the Fillies'
home court. The Huskies are the
only team that has blemished the
Fillies’ record with two losses.
Heppner and Sherman battled
back and fourth throughout the
whole game. It was neck and
neck as defense played an impor
tant role and it showed as both
teams were knotted up at eight
points each after a quarter of
play.
The Fillies looked intent on
winning as they rode the hot
shooting of Jodi Johnston in the
second quarter as she scored eight
of her 15 points taking the girls
into the locker room w ith a 23-19
lead.

Six seniors, Justin Miller,
David W agenblast, Deacon
Heideman, Ryan Halvorsen, Mac
Lovett and Tony Bjerke, played
their last home game to a packed
house on Friday, Feb. 12 but the
end result wasn’t quite what they
had in mind. The Cardinals took
a disappointing loss to the Blue
Devils 52-47. Condon seemed in
tent on not letting the Cards get
away from them by slowing the
pace of the game a bit and turn
ing on the defensive pressure.
The Cards led 14-13 at the end
of one but trailed 23-29 at the
half. In the third quarter, they
held Condon to just one field goal
and pulled back to a 35 33 lead.
But in the fourth quarter, the Blue
Devils canned nine of their 13
free throw attempts as the Car
dinals continued to have trouble
getting their shots to fall, and
Condon came away with the
52-47 win.
Tony Bjerke was the only Card
in double figures with 10 points.
The Cards were hurt on the
boards, where Condon out re
bounded them 35-31. Aaron

with 10, followed by Deacon

Heideman also had four blocked
shots and Jason Halvorsen add

game close for the first half. In
the second half though, the Car

into their own game and ran off
with the 95-54 victory.
Deacon Heideman was the
game’s high scorer with 16
points. He also had 10 rebounds
and three blocked shots. Justin
Miller hit three treys and ended
the game with 15 points, and
Ryan Halvorsen chipped in with
14.
The Cards dominated the
boards 68-25, led by Jared"

and Tony Bjerke with 10 each.
There were plenty of assists to go
around with David Wagenblast
and Ashbeck each tallying four
and Jim Logan, Jake Bacon and
Ryan Halvorsen each con

The Cards improved their
shooting, making 38 of 85 for 45
