FOUR - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, January 6, 1993 Mustangs and Fillies beat Prairie City The Heppner Fillies chalked up another win on Dec. 22, this time at the expense of Prairie City. The Fillies are now 5 -0 with the 59-33 victory over the visiting Panthers. Heppner racked up an im pressive 21 steals as the defense shone for the Fillies. On offense Kelsie Evans down ed 11 points. Holly Eckman 12 points. The Fillies, who haven’t played a game since Dec. 22 due to bad weather, will travel to Umatilla in the first league game of the season. It was the second win against three losses for the Mustangs this season, who will travel to Umatilla Saturday, Jan. 9 to begin league play. The Mustangs’ Rick Koffler was high scorer in the contest, connecting on eight field goals, three from three-point range, to talley a total of 20 points. Len Brittner had a productive night, chipping in 16 points, while Duane Dunaway added 12 to round out the Mustang players in double figures. -¡-Visitors at the Jean Nelson home for Christm as were daughter, Kristin and husband John Graham, from Salem. Chuck and Lisa Nelson and children and Lisa’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Maness from Olympia, WA. The group en joyed a trip to Four-mile Canyon, Oregon Trail sight and to Wells Springs. -¡-Many of the activities plann ed for the holidays were cancell ed due to the cold weather. -¡-Lexington Grange held their regular meeting on Monday, Dec 21 with the newly installed master Roger Scharen in the chair. A potluck dinner was enjoyed with Carl and Geri Martin and Kathy and Ned Clark as chairmen. The program was a delight, furnish ed by the children of the First Christian Church. Articles were brought for the Ron McDonald House. The next meeting will be men’s night, January 18 with the men furnishing the refreshments and progams. -¡-Holly Rebekah Lodge met New District Attorney starts IMS girls open season with win work By Kara Miller The lone Middle School girls’ basketball team opened its season with a double overtime victory, 24-22 against the Echo Cougars pn December 7. The Cards were paced by Suzy Heideman, the only returning starter from last year’s team, and Laree Anderson. They both had 10 points. Kara Miller led with six assists. The Cardinals will play Echo again on January 7. Earl Woods New member Nancy Brownfield (center) was installed in to the Soroptimist International Club of Heppner recently. She was installed by LoRayne Bowman (1) and assisted by Jackie Allstott (r). Merri Reamer joins Brownfield as a new member but has not yet been installed. Central committee elects officers Bob Jepsen was elected chair man of the Morrow County Republican Central Committee at its organizational meeting held recently. Meg Murray and Kay Proctor were elected vice- chairman and secretary-treasurer respectively. Other committee members were appointed to the following committees: finance-Meg Mur ray. Bruce Nichols and Claudia Dent; publicity-Pat Edmundson and Ronda W allace; voter registration-Suzanne Jepsen. Ray French and Nancy Jepsen; can didate recruitment-Brok Tucker and Ed Glenn; parades-Ken Turner; fair booth-John and Erin Lovett; phone calling-Barton Clark, Bill Jepsen and Norma French. Bob Jepsen, Meg Murray and Kay Proctor were elected as delegates to the Oregon State Republican Convention with Suzanne Jepsen and Brok Tucker as alternates. Tax classes set for child care givers Certified public accountant Brent Fife of Morrison Fife and Jenson will conduct a tax class for family child care providers on January 14 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the BMCC Small Business Development center, 27 S.E. Dorion in Pendleton. Certified public accountant Jerry Moro of Barnett. Dennis and Moro will conduct a class in Hermiston on January 21 from 7-9 p.m. at 495 E. Main. Hermiston. In ¡¡\ Muais doing day care in their home as a business will be able to learn of the deductions available to them, the documen tation they should have and get ideas of record keeping that will aid them in their business, said a U m atilla-M orrow County Head Start press release. Woods, Jr., began work at the courthouse on Jan. 4. Woods, 49, who has been in private practice in Cocquille for the past 12 years, is no stranger to Morrow County. His step father Kenneth Oviatt, graduated from high school in Heppner and his mother spent time with relatives in lone as a child. Woods himself worked laying water lines in Heppner as a teenager and lived at the hotel during his stay. The owner of the hotel at the time was a friend of his stepfather’s. Wood said that while he was here he got to know Sheriff C.J.D. Bowman and his family and remembers being shown the water mark of the 1903 flood on a downtown building. “ I like it here,” Woods commented. ‘‘I feel very much at home.” Woods said that his wife, Gail, who is a registered nurse, grew up in Eastern Oregon. She lived for a time in Ukiah and graduated from Bums High School. Gail will remain in Coquille until they are able to sell their house, he said. Woods has two children, Allison, 12 and Patrick, 11, who live with their mother. Gail also has two children Christine, 16 and Brian 14. Gun Club plans shoot Communion set The Rev. Bob Crum will celebrate Holy Communion at All Saints Episcopal Church on Sun day, January 10, at 10:30 a.m. Rt. Rev. Rustin Kimsey will be present for his annual visitation on Sunday. January 24. The Morrow County Gun Club will have its first shoot Sunday, Jan. 10 at the club located behind the Lexington Grange Hall at Cutsforth Corners. The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. with the shoot to follow. for a social evening and Christmas party. A potluck din ner and a gift exchange were en joyed. Seven boxes of goodies were prepared and given to peo ple who were alone at Christmas. Due to bad weather the card par ty was postponed. -¡-Philip Tellechea spent several days last week at the home of his aunt and uncle Mike and Lyn Burcham, in Pendleton. -¡-Visitors at the Bill Padberg home during the holidays were his grandaughter, Sheridan K linger and fiance from LaGrande. -¡-Visitors at the Cecil Jones ranch over the holidays were Charlene Whitney, Max Akers and Kimberlee Whitney from Portland; Vicky Bowen and children from Goldendale, WA.; Stuart and Valda Smith and daughter; Delpha Jo from Her miston and the Kenneth Jones family from Lexington. -¡-Phyllis Anderson is at home after spending several weeks in Nebraska helping care for her father who was ill. -:-Carl Smouse is visiting at the home of his parents, Ken and Frances Smouse. -¡-Visitors at the Faye Ruhl home over the holidays were Skip Ruhl, Traci and Sam Pollack and son of Hermiston, Florence Gray, Heppner, Dick and Lynn Ruhl of Roseburg, Mr. and Mrs. Rick Ross and sons from Coos Bay, and Richard and Frances Peck and daughter Judy. -¡-Dick and Lynn Ruhl and Skip Ruhl recently returned frotn Shreveport, La., where they at tended the game at the In dependence Bowl where Rick Ruhl was playing. -¡-Visitors at the home of Eldon Gilbert were Gene Heliker and daughter Jessica, Donna Cutsforth of The Dalles, and Stuart and Julie Dick and family from Hermiston.
