Mustangs and Fillies beat Prairie City
The Heppner Fillies chalked up
another win on Dec. 22, this time
at the expense of Prairie City.
The Fillies are now 5 -0 with the
59-33 victory over the visiting
Panthers.
Heppner racked up an im
pressive 21 steals as the defense
shone for the Fillies.
On offense Kelsie Evans down
ed 11 points. Holly Eckman 12
points.
The Fillies, who haven’t played
a game since Dec. 22 due to bad
weather, will travel to Umatilla
in the first league game of the
season.

It was the second win against
three losses for the Mustangs this
season, who will travel to
Umatilla Saturday, Jan. 9 to
begin league play.
The Mustangs’ Rick Koffler
was high scorer in the contest,
connecting on eight field goals,
three from three-point range, to
talley a total of 20 points. Len
Brittner had a productive night,
chipping in 16 points, while
Duane Dunaway added 12 to
round out the Mustang players in
double figures.

ed by the children of the First
Christian Church. Articles were
brought for the Ron McDonald
House. The next meeting will be
men’s night, January 18 with the
men furnishing the refreshments
and progams.

IMS girls open season with win work

The lone Middle School girls’
basketball team opened its season
with a double overtime victory,
24-22 against the Echo Cougars
pn December 7.
The Cards were paced by Suzy
Heideman, the only returning
starter from last year’s team, and
Laree Anderson. They both had
10 points. Kara Miller led with
six assists.
The Cardinals will play Echo
again on January 7.

Merri Reamer joins Brownfield as a new member but has not yet

New ly-appointed Morrow
County District Attorney Earl R.
Woods, Jr., began work at the
courthouse on Jan. 4.
Woods, 49, who has been in
private practice in Cocquille for
the past 12 years, is no stranger
to Morrow County. His step
father Kenneth Oviatt, graduated
from high school in Heppner and
his mother spent time with
relatives in lone as a child.
Woods himself worked laying
water lines in Heppner as a
teenager and lived at the hotel
during his stay. The owner of the
hotel at the time was a friend of
his stepfather’s. Wood said that
while he was here he got to know
Sheriff C.J.D. Bowman and his
family and remembers being
shown the water mark of the 1903
flood on a downtown building. “ I
like it here,” Woods commented.
‘‘I feel very much at home.”
Woods said that his wife, Gail,
who is a registered nurse, grew
up in Eastern Oregon. She lived
for a time in Ukiah and graduated
from Bums High School. Gail
will remain in Coquille until they
are able to sell their house, he
said.
Woods has two children,
Allison, 12 and Patrick, 11, who
live with their mother. Gail also
has two children Christine, 16
and Brian 14.

Jan. 10 at the club located behind
the Lexington Grange Hall at

The meeting will begin at 10
a.m. with the shoot to follow.
