The Morrow-Umatilla Vial of Life program, sponsored by the Community Action Program for East Central Oregon (CAPECO), and the Hermiston Fire Depart ment, is well underway. The program, which alerts emergency medical personnel to a person’s medical problems and conditions, even if they are un conscious has been made available to senior citizens at mealsites throughout Morrow and Umatilla counties. Corol Mitchell, CAPECO outreach specialist, says that while the program has been aim ed mainly at seniors, anyone with medical concerns may par ticipate. Mitchell says that she will speak to any group that re quests her and will distribute the vials free of charge. Vials may also be picked up at the CAPECO offices at Hermiston and Irrigon or call the Irrigon office at 1-800-547-7316. This is the way the life saving program works. A person fills out a form with his or her complete m edical history, including a lle rg ie s^ m edications and chronic Conditions. Mitchell says that in an emergency situation it is not always easy, especially for children, to remember home ad dresses and phone numbers. The idea for the program in Umatilla and Morrow counties came from Lois Lewis in Her miston, who arranged for the donation of 1,000 vials from Payless to get the program off the ground. Mitchell arranged for the donation of 250 vials from Mur ray’s Drug in Heppner and the printing of 3,000 stickers, forms and posters from the Gazette-Times. Lt.
