Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, July 29, 1992 - FIVE Obituaries Katie Jellick Jurich Graveside services for Katie Jellick Jurich will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday July 30, 1992 at the Condon Masonic Cemetery in Condon. Pastor Sherman Smith will officiate. Katie Jurich, 83, passed away July 25, 1992 at her home in Roseburg. She was bom May 19, 1909 in Gospic, Yugoslavia, the daughter of Ika Starcenic and Luka Canic. She married Martin Jellick in 1927. He passed away in 1940. She later married Matt Jurich, who passed away in 1950. She moved from Kinzua to Roseburg in 1957. She is survived by two sons George Jellick of Roseburg and Mark Jellick of Prineville; two grandsons, one grandaughter, four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Those who wish may call on Wednesday until 8 p.m. July 29, at Long & Shukle Memorial Chapel. Contributions may be made to the Douglas Community Hospital Hospice Program. Mary Van Vactor Stevens Former Heppner resident Mary Van Vactor Stevens, 85, died Ju ly 23, 1992 at a nursing home in The Dalles. She was born November 30, 1906. Mary was the first nurse to graduate from the Public School of Health at the University of Washington. She set up the first public health unit in The Dalles. She took maternal and child health care courses at Columbia University in New York. She was supervisor of Public Health in Montana and held a series of public health jobs in Oregon. Retiring from public health work she ran a floral shop in Heppner where she was also city mayor. She moved to The Dalles where she ran Mary Vans Floral shop for 15 years. Leaving the floral business she returned to the medical profession to train aides for the mentally retarded. This program was such a success she started another one in Salem for a large group of mentally retard ed. Mary pursued her hobby of petroglyph rubbing. She trained others and has 10 of her rubbings at Maryhill Museum, including one rubbing of a petroglyph now covered by water from The Dalles Dam. She is survived by a brother Sam Van Van Vactor and two sisters Ruth Van Shane and Grace Minor, Kennewick, WA; a nephew Van Rietmann, Condon and several other neices and nephews. Memorial services were held Tuesday, July 28, 1992 at Old St. Pauls Episcopal Church. Harshman Loyd E. Harshman, 83, of Milton-Freewater, died Monday, July 20, 1992 at Elzora Care Center, Milton-Freewater. At his request there was no funeral service. One of five children, Loyd was born May 2, 1909 at Pendleton to Harvey and Anna Sperry Harshman. When he was five, he moved with his family to Hardman and then later towards Rock Creek in Juniper Canyon where his parents took up a homestead. He later moved to a place near Hail Ridge, known as Harshman Canyon. He worked at herding sheep and on ranches from the time he was 12. On March 3, 1931, he married Edna Lovgren in Heppner. They moved to Heppner where he worked on ranches and at the Pastime, where he tended bar and dealt cards. During the war he worked at the mill pulling on the green chain, feeding the planer and pil ing lumber. He later started working in the mountains falling timber. In 1955, he moved to Dayton, Wash., where he felled timber and also joined the Operating Engineers, working as an oiler on the whirleys at dams on the Snake River. When he was 62, he and his son operated the Union 76 gas station in Dayton. He later went back to work on the dams until his retirement. They moved to a three-acre place between Milton-Freewater and Umapine. They lived there for 14 years until they were no longer able to care for it and then moved to Milton-Freewater. Survivors include his wife at home; his two daughters Billie (Mrs. Darrell) Coppock of Lone Rock and Anna Marie (Mrs. Dan) Abel of Milton-Freewater; Weddings O ’Connor — Doherty Margaret Kathrine O ’Connor and Donald Edward Doherty were married on December 18, 1991 at St. Martin’s Catholic Church at Louisville, Kentucky. Father Vernon Robertson officiated. The bride is the daughter of George E. O ’Connor, J r., Louisville, Ky. She wore a traditional white gown. She has a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering fromthe University of Louisville. She was employed as a bookkeeper with Southland Electrical Supply Com pany, In. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles J. Doherty of lone. He is a graduate of lone High School. He is a squad leader with the United States Infantry. Ceremony musicians were Mark Cooper and Cathy Wilde. Maid of honor was Wendy Craig, friend of the bride, Louisville, KY. Best man was Richard B. Doherty, brother of the groom, lone. Ushers were Mike. George and John O’Connor, brothers of the bride. Afer a wedding trip to Gatlinburg, Tenn., the couple made their home at Marina, CA near where he is stationed with the Army at Fort Ord, CA. St. Patrick’s Senior Center Bulletin Board A pre-wedding party and shower was held at the Senior Center July 16 for Marguerite Webb and Truman Messenger. Frivolous gifts were given and a game played. Cake and punch were served. They were married July 22 in the First Christian Church after their garden wedding at Truman’s yard was rained out. The seniors wish them much happiness. Saturday. July 20. seniors enjoyed a picnic and games at Eleanor Gonty’s cabin at Penland Lake. Eleven seniors went by bus to the dance at Hermiston Saturday night. July 25. Millie May had the misfortune of becoming ill and was taken to Good Shepherd Community Hospital. Paul and Blan che Jones went over Sunday to bring her home where she is recovering nicely. This was the last dance until the fall. Ninety-seven people attended the senior dinner July 22, including eight guests. The meal ticket went to Jack VanWinkle. Florence Green won the door prize and Lance Tibbies received the guest prize. Members of the Episcopal Church served. The menu for August 5 will be barbecued beef on a bun. tossed salad w ith carrots, peaches and pudding. Members of the Christian church will serve. The bus trip was filled to capacity Sunday evening July 26 for the trip to Valby church for the ice cream social. The homemade ice cream, cookies and cake were delicious. The skits and singing were enjoyed by the large crowd. Dates to remember: Monday, I to 4 p.m. quilting; Tuesday and Thursday, 10 to 10:30 a.m. exercise. two sons Loyd (Bud) Harshman of Walla Walla and Frank Har shman of Dayton; two brothers, Everett Harshman of Lexington and Buel Harshman of Dayton and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. He raised a grandson Bruce Harshman of Walla Walla. He was preceded in death by two sisters Irene Howard and Delsie Mae Waldon. The Trail News By Sandi Ford Oregon Trail Pro Rodeo Committee A nother M orrow County cowboy has made rodeo news this week. Tony Currin of Heppner won the all-around title at Salinas, CA on July 11-12, placing in the calf roping and steer wrestling with winnings of over $6,000. The Oregon Trail Pro Rodeo committee announces that Gogi Davis of Vale, Colorado, will be providing a state of the art sound system and a professional scoreboard for the PRCA rodeo on August 22 and 23 at the Mor row County Fairgrounds. The scoreboard will post the con testants name and time and best time per event. Gogi provides an excellent sound system for many PRCA rodeos throughout the country. Entries for Friday night’s Mor row County Rodeo will open on Sunday, August 16 from 1-6 p.m. at the Fair office or call 676-9474. Entries will also be taken all day Monday, Aug. 17 at Marlene Currin’s home or phone 676-9711. Entries must be paid by Thursday, Aug. 20 to Marlene Currin. All Morrow County residents who have lived in Morrow County for at least one year and Morrow County Schools’ alumni are invited to enter.
