Brooke Boyer and Julie Watkins have been working on flared skirts. Stephanie Clough, Macy Rhea and Allison Sykes have been making dirndl skirts and Kristi Worden is making a pair of bibs. The next meeting was Friday, July 24. Members were to finish fair projects. Important Differences Later this week, right after press time for both Morrow County papers, the Governor will announce the Regional Strategies projects she has selected for funding in the Umatilla/Morrow County Region. Next week you will read about those projects, but you can be assured that most of them will be Morrow Coun ty projects. Two factors will account for that. First, in this round of funding, the biggest, the best and the most projects were submitted by Morrow County developers. That does not come by accident. Most of those projects were encouraged by the Port of Mor row and the general development attitude of Morrow County. While that attitude is not shared by all, most folks would like to see a little growth and development, especially in the value added agriculture in dustries. Jobs, tax base and better markets for farm produce give the industry a triple whammy in boosting the local economy. When there is a growth and development attitude among the local folks, developers consider that a real plus. There are so many areas of the country that are no-growth minded that building a new plant of any kind, even for the big boys, can be a problem. But not in Mor row County. The other factor that contributed to the heavy Morrow County mix is the powerful representation Morrow County has on the Regional Strategies Committee. The committee is composed of six members from each county, so we have what might be called an equal position for a change. I was proud to serve with the likes of Gary Neal, Frank Pearson, Dan Hernandez, Joe McElligott and Meg Murray. What with all the differences there might be between us, none of them ever surfaced in the work of the committee. These six very different people from every comer of the county pulled as one for the benefit of us all. Regional Strategies is not the only place Morrow County folks pull together. Time and again, folks who differ greatly on local issues are found shoulder to shoulder on county-wide issues. Many times I have heard one Morrow County resident defend another in Salem or Portland or Pendleton, when at home they are seemingly arch enemies. I won’t be so brash as to say this is unique to Morrow County. But it is a trait not shared by many. Maybe in our list of differences, we only scratched the surface and found nothing of very great significance. It may be that growing irrigated potatoes in the north is very different from growing dry land wheat in the south, but that difference is not very meaningful, not important at all. Now wouldn’t that be something. To discover that for all our out ward appearing differences, when it comes to the important things, we’re not that different at all? Maybe, if we intend to write about the important issues of the day, we would find that the differences between us wouldn’t even be on the list. As a friend said, “ that’s new thinking, it might take years.” Perhaps if we try this new thinking, it won’t take all that many years at all.
