By Delpha Jones The tx>ard of directors of the Morrow County Historical Socie ty met on Monday evening for the regular meeting at the home of Shirley Zielinski with Jerry Peck as host. The minutes of the previous meeting and the treasurer’s reports were read and approved. The secretary reported on the essay contest that is sponsored by the society for junior high students in Morrow County. Winners were: first-Melissa M cElligott; second-M arie Tworek and a tie for third bet ween Lynde Minster and Becky Wagenblast. Each of the con testants was presented a bond. Because of the busy schedule at school and lack o f interest throughout the county the group voted to discontinue this contest. They plan to continue another project as they feel that it is im portant that the students know about their county, how it was settled and by whom and the many advancements since then. A report was heard on the Groshens fountain in Heppner. That work is being done by the city with Wilbur Jackson in charge. The project involves get ting water and drainage in the fountain at the fairgrounds. They will be assisted by the road department. The Irrigon W aterm elon Festival date was announced for August 22. Jean Nelson gave a fine report on the Oregon Trail project, and stated that the Oregon-Califomia Trail association has been mark ing important trails and have been in our area. She also announced that the Century Farm award went to the Osmin family. The group will purchase two books, “ The First Oregonian,” for each of the lone and Heppner libraries as gifts. Irrigon and Boardman have already received theirs. Sue V inson, Barbara Bloodsworth and Ruth McCabe were appointed to decorate a fair booth. The annual meeting which is set for October 4 at the Lexington Grange Hall will have a display of old quilts. Everyone is en couraged to bring a quilt for display. The society voted to donate to the flood sign to be erected in Heppner in commemoration of the 1903 flood, and to the Wells Springs signs. Club members enjoyed looking at pictures taken of the recent trip to Port Townsend and Squino, sponsored by the Morrow Coun ty Historical Society. Jim and Barbara Bloodsworth, Cecil and Delpha Jones and the host and hostess. lone Garden Club to help park By Delpha Jones lone Garden Club met at Bir- dine Tullis’ home for the regular meeting on Wed. July 8. Darcy Robinson was co-hostess. The program, given by Jim Rudisill was on the long-range plan for the lone City Park. Many interesting plans are underway. Much interest was shown by those present and it was decided to assist with the project. For more inform ation members should contact Jean Nelson. Helen Martin gave a report on the state meeting. A report was heard concerning the flower ex hibits at the fair, and a commit tee appointed. Guest for the day was Kathryn Lindstrom. Lovely refreshments were served by the hostesses. Bike-a-thon Soroptimists install new officers raises over $ 2,000 i: By Anne Morter Participants in the St. Jude bike-a-thon held in lone on May 17 have received their T-shirts and other awards from the St. Jude C hildren’s Research Hospital. The 54 participants in the an nual event raised $2,252 for the hospital, which is the largest ch ild ren ’s cancer research hospital in the world. According to bike-a-thon coordinator Loa McElligott, the hospital was quite impressed and appreciative of their efforts. With medical costs always rising, the need for funds is great. McElligott commended the ef forts and cooperation of the com munity as they not only put their monetary support behind the event but also gave freely of their time. She also gave special thanks to a pair of unnamed donors who substantially boosted the cash total. Pauline Winter was installed as first vice-president, Jackie Bergstrom , second vice- president; Vi Wilgers, correspon ding secretary; Marianne Kahl, recording secretary; Judie Laughlin, treasurer; Carol Michael Bennett, board member and Molly Rill, regional delegate. Outgoing delegate LoRayne Bowman was presented the “ Most Dedicated” soroptimist award for her work during the year by outgoing president Pat Hyatt. Hyatt received the “ most inventive” award for creating the soroptimist mail box. Judie Laughlin received the artists award for her artwork and Vi Wilgers received the florist’s award for her floral a r rangements. Pauline Winter earn ed the “ Potato Award” for the best committee project work. Besides Bowman and Hyatt, outgoing officers were Joyce Hughes, first vice-president and Pauline W inter, second vice-president.
