EIG H T - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, April 15, 1992 John Melvin Savitts John Melvin Savitts, Portland, formerly of Heppner, died April 1, 1992 at a Portland care center. He was 83. Inurnment services will be held Monday, April 13 at 11 a.m. at the Rose City Cemetery. Mr. Savitts was bom at Boone, Iowa on October 4, 1908. He drove across the country in a Model-T with his father when he was 19. In the 1930s he moved to Portland. He was a cabinet maker and millman his entire life. He belonged to the Millman’s Uhion Local No. 1120. In 1973 he retired and moved to Blake Ranch in Heppner. He was known as “ Hurricane John” because he lived on the ridge in the Blue Mountains known as Hurricane Ridge. His wife’s name was Frieda. Mr. Savitts is survived by daughters, Juanita Watkins, Troutdale, and Virginia Buntjer, Beaverton; grandsons Dan Watkins, Troutdale, Dennis and Daryl Watkins, Portland and Mit- chel Hoffman, Seattle, WA.; and five great-grandchildren. Mary Cartv Doherty Rosary for Mary Carty Doher ty was held April 9, 1992 at the Chapel of Hennessey, Goetsch and McGee Mortuary, Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial was said on Friday, April 10 at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Portland. Concluding services and inter ment were Saturday, April 11 at the Heppner Masonic cemetery. Mrs. Doherty died Tuesday, April 7 at St. Vincent Hospital, Portland, from a heart condition. Mrs. Doherty was bom to James and Maria Curran Carty on July 6, 1907 in Heppner where her parents ranched. She was raised in Heppner, graduated from St. Joseph Academy at Pendleton and St. M ary’s Academy in Portland. She mar ried Frank C. Doherty in 1935 at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Portland. They moved to Butte, Montana following their marriage and returned to Portland in 1960. Mr. Doherty died in 1977. Mrs. Doherty was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Cathedral in Portland. She is survived by two daughters, Diane Doherty of Washington D.C., and Karen Cline of Miles City, Montana; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Chamber Manager All residents of Central and Eastern Oregon who want to help shape the future of their com munities and their state are in vited to attend the Central and Eastern Oregon Sagebrush Uni ty Conference in Baker City May 8 and 9. This conference is about people from Central and Eastern Oregon taking charge of their destiny and determining ways to best preserve and enhance our cherished way of life. Topics for discussing are all areas that con cern us-- the econom y, agriculture, timber, the environ ment, education, community ser vices for people, an our unique culture and heritage as residents of this part of the state. It sounds like an opportunity to articulate the values we hold dear, the issues we face, and the strategies we support. The results will be documented for distribution throughout the state. It is the in tention that gatherings such as this will be held before every legislative session for years to come. Registrants are asked to answer the following three questions: 1) With all the places one could choose to live, why do you live in Eastern Oregon? 2) What is it about living in Eastern Oregon that you value the very most? 3) What worries you most about the future of Eastern Oregon? If you can’t attend but would like to share your responses, bring them by the Chamber Office and registrants will share them at the Baker meeting. Hill, 87, Heppner, died Friday, April 3, 1992 at Pioneer Memorial Hospital. The funeral was held at the First Christian Church in Hepp ner on Tuesday, April 7, 1992. Concluding service and vault in terment was at the Heppner Masonic Cemetery. Mr. Hill was bom Dec. 31, 1904 at Heppner to Wilburn and Ethel Phelps Hill. On April 17, 1932 he married Julia Harris at Yakima, WA. An electrician by trade, he was employed by the State of Oregon as an electrical inspector at Coos Bay from 1949 until 1969. He also managed the Apprenticeship Program for the state during that time. He returned to Heppner in 1976. He was a member of the Inter national Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the Heppner Odd Fellows Lodge. Survivors include his wife, at the home; son Dale and his wife Betty, and son Clayton and wife Mary, all of Coos Bay; daughter Creagh and her husband Jim Williams of College Place, WA.; sister Bette Vinson of Danville, CA.; brother Rufus of North Fort Myers, Fla.; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
