It em like all m friend go to partie and drink beer. I know I'm not upposed to, but all my friend say it• great . The want me to drink. and I want to k p my friend . I kn that you both drink. Sometime at home, ometime at partie . If y u do. why h uldn 't I? Love, your teenager. I u pect you have not gonen a letter like thi one, but chan es are your teenager(s) are thinking these thoughts. What are you go- ing to do? One method might be to it down and di cu an agree- ment, tating what both ide ex- pect. Here i a ugge ted covenant: Family afe Driving Pledge: To my parent : I know that alcohol and drug u e i illegal for minor , and that driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs 1 illegal regardle of age. I also know that you expect me to follow the law. However, I pledge to call you for advice and/or transportation if I am ever in a ituation where I have been drinking or taking drug , or the per on who i driv- ing ha been drinking or taking drug . I under tand that we will talk about my behavior and your ex- pectation at a later time; however, I appreciate your con- cern for my immediate afety. Your im- mediate afety i my fir t concern . However, I will want to talk with you about your behavior and my expectation at a later time. I a1so pledge to act as re pon ibly as I expect you to. Signature The Heppner Oregon Together Group suggest that parents talk with their children about drugs and alcohol and make a covenant or agreement that deals with behavior and safety. Thanks for taking the time on thi s important issue. Sincerely, ( ) Rev. Stan Hoobing Convenor of Heppner/Lexington Oregon Together Heppner sixth graders voice concerns .. .- (Editor's Note: Following are letters of concern, interest and appreciation from some of the sixth grade students at Hepp- ner Middle School. The sixth graders have been studying about newspapers and what it takes to publish one. Their let- ters range from closing the Heppner swimming pool , ap- preciating the honor card system and Parents Club, stopping for children in crosswalks, closing the skating rink and the police department. The sixth graders were sincere in their concern over these issues. During their study they published their own newspaper.) To the Editor: I think we need to buy ome stop lights on Main Street. When school gets out there are kids run- ning around and they might get hurt. To prevent the e accident I think we need to have a fund raiser and buy them and put them up with the money that's raised. Lexie Short I would like to thank the Parents Club for all the things they have given to the school. They just gave us two new basketball hoops and have al o given u two VCR's. They have given u lots of things that we all enjoy . Thanks Parent Club. Brian Bum ide I think we should give special thanks to the Parent' Club. They have given us alot of things like basketball hoops and VCRs. If we didn't have the Parent's Club then we wouldn't have many of the items we enjoy at our chool . Anyone who ha a child in school or an intere t in the chool could join Parent' Club. They have their meetings on the first Tuesday of every month. The date for the re t of the year are Feb. 4, March 3, April 7 , and May 5. Show your support for kids and the chool by getting in- volved in Parent' s Club. Mindy Bin chu I would like to voice my opi- nion about ecurity in Heppner. I like ome of the police officers, but their patrol routes are ridiculous. I live on Hager Street. Last month, there was a drug bust on my street. Everybody around the neighborhood suspected it for about a year. It took that long to reveal it. I ee a police car drive by my house a maximum of three times a month. I ay that they're down at Cal's in their reserved parking place drinking coffee. Jonas Healy Have you ever been in a crosswalk and had to wait for about five minutes before anybody would stop to let you walk to the other side of the road? Well, I have and I hate it. This i a real problem on the main treet of Heppner. As it is now pedestrians have three choices: one-wait five minutes for all the traffic; two-trust the traffic and walk across the road; and three- jay walk. But pecle trians need to use the cro swalk . Especially when all the kid are walking home from chool. And drivers need to stop for tho e pede trian in the crosswalk. Together we can make the treets of Heppner safer. Melissa Cutsforth I'm writing today to express my feelings about the skating rink being closed . One year ago, the kating rink closed. It has not opened because it needs a few changes . There are many kids that would like to go skating again. The kate are for ale and it would be nice if omeone would buy the kates and rent the skating rink. I sure wish someone would buy the skates, so all of the kids could go skating again. They would be grateful if someone would open it back up. Ty on Palmateer JUST ARRIVED Spring Floral Fabrics New items ... at $3. 79 yd. Heppner, OR 676-5241 9' The Heppner wimming pool won't be open thi ummer. Thi 1 due to Measure 5 . What are kid going to do? At the Heppner dam kid can go wimming, but it• dangerou . They need to have wimming le son at the pool to tay safe. People should add it to the hoot budget like lone does. We should rai rooney, and lot of it. Cam Sweeney We need the kating rink to reopen o there i omething to do in thi mall town. The kating rink wa fun and it wa good exercise. It would probably get kid off the treets and out of trouble too. I have been kating ever ince I was three years old and this i the first year I haven't been skating. It is terrible. So please try to reopen the kating rink. Tom Zumwalt We need some stop lights in Heppner. When little kids come to the crosswalk the cars don't always stop. If we had stop light then they would help to avoid any accidents . We need to make the streets more afe for everyone. Tim Sumner I would like to expre s my feel- ing about the upkeep of public places such as parks. The people that work for the city are nice, but I don't see why they can't make things a little nicer around town. I know that many of the job they do aren't noticeable, but very important to our town. But I'd like to see better care taken of the parks. For instance, the grass cut more often, more trees and flowers planted and more equipment for kids to use. Josh Roy I'm writing to show apprecia- tion for all of the businesses and people who are willing to give free items or discounts to kids at school whose grade average is over 3.50. The kids get a card that has their picture on it. The card is called an honor card. These kids can go to certain businesses and get free items such as a pencil, a medium pop, or maybe a dis- count, half off any item or buy- one, get-one free. Kids work real- ly hard for these cards. Keep working. We really thank all of the businesses for their contributions. Jayme Hansen I'm writing to talk to you about the swimming pool closure . When I found out I was so mad . That was our favorite spot to hang out in the summer time. Also it is a good place to teach kids how to swim. It is also very good exercise as well as very fun . If kids go to the dam without first knowing how to swim, that is very dangerous and they might even drown. Now that it is closed we won't have any place to swim except for the dam, (who would want to swim there?) . I just want to say we should work together and have a fund raiser to build a new pool or fix the old one. Jessica VanWinkle I would like to express my feel- ings about how nice the town has been to Kelly Rafferty. Kelly is a tudent here at Heppner Mid- dle School. I think the town and chool were very helpful by sending let- ter , cards, and gifts. We hould be proud that when someone needs help we give help. She Sieler I would like to thank the Parents Club for donating thing we need here at the school. Recently they gave the fifth and sixth grades two basketball hoop . The Parent Club ha given VCR' , card , and a11 ort of things to the chool. It would be great if more peo- ple would come to the Parent Club meeting . They're on the fir t Tuesday of every month . Jo ie Proctor I am writing thi letter to thank the Parent's Club for the new basketball hoops they donated for the fifth and sixth grader and I'd also like to thank them for the Carnival every year. There are many other things the Parent' Club ha done over the year to help our hoot. I know the school appreciate thi group effo rt . Anyone i welcome to join Parent' Club and help the kid of Heppner. Sarah B er I am writing thi letter to thank the Parent' Club for donating new basketball hoops for the mid- dle hool kid . Also for the chool carnival every year, and many other things they did and will do in the future. All the kids are happy for all that the Parents Club did for them and the hool . C ti Ta lor I think our community is real- ly nice to help people out that are sick or in need of help. For in- tance George Waterland was down in Portland having surgery. George works at the mill in Heppner. Hi wife, Karla, work a an aide for the Heppner Mid- dle School. The cooks at Heppner Middle School are starting a raffle to raise money for the family. The kid at school are going to sell the ticket door to door. There are three prizes. The tickets cost 25 cent . The winning number will be announced at the last home basketball game. I hope that the community of Heppner will sup- port this effort to help the Waterlands. Adam Doherty I would like to state my opinion about the problem of trying to cross the street in Heppner. Lit- tle kids leaving school at 2:30 are in danger because cars don't alway stop for them. Kids stand in hail, rain, snow or sleet and till the cars never stop. So I think that crossing guards at 2 :30 to help kids aero s the treet would be safer. Joe Kindle I think crosswalks are really dangerous anymore, cars don't always stop for pedestrians. Lit- tle kids try crossing the street and ome cars going by see them and don't care. What I think we should get is some crossing signs, or lights to let people know to watch out for kids. IL wuuld also be great if people would volunteer to walk little kids aero sat 2:30 when lit- tle kids get out of school. It's against the law for cars to go by when people are standing there waiting to get across. Let's all work together to make the streets of Heppner safer. Linsey Ropp The Parents Club in Heppner has done a lot of things to help our school. The Parents Club really helped out the school by getting new VCR's. They bought two new ones this year. They put up new basketball hoops for the fifth and sixth graders. The seventh and eighth graders play at the tennis courts. Everyone enjoys them. Thank you Parents Club. Jarrod Clark I think that the swimming pool should be open because summer is boring without a pool . It keeps kids in shape and give them something to do. I know it takes a lot of money to fix and run it. But everyone in town, whether they use it or not, benefit from it. It gives them something to do. We need to all work together to raise money and save our pool . Caleb McDaniel I am writing to you to express my feelings about crosswalks. I don't think people care about who i going to cross. I think we could top that. I wa talking to ome friends and we tarted thinking about cro swalks and maybe having crossing guards. It would give them something to do outside and also help our little children . Katie Nichols I think we hould have cros guards o the cars will stop on Main Street. People should stop, e pecially for little kid , becau e they tru t the car to stop. Maybe a lot of people would like to be cros guards, e pecial - ly enior citizen , who might have extra time. Perhap an organization could organize peo- ple to help. Cro ing guard would help keep the children of Heppner afe. Ka Fo ter I am writing to expre s my feelings about cro swalks. It i a problem when the little kid want to cro the treet and the car won ' t top. If we had orne cro ing guard to help the 'ds cross it w uld be much safer. Officers could give ticke if they d n't top. Katie Kenny I am writing to you because of the wimming pool closure. I think there are going to be a lot of families that are going to com- plain if the city closes the swim- ming pool. Where are the kids going to go? The dam? Well, what if the kids drown up there then what are we going to do? That's why the city needs to open the pool for swimming lessons. I know that a lot of kids are go- ing to be upset if they don't get to go swimming. If we need to make some money why don' t we have a fund raiser? I realize that the swimm- ing pool has a lot of problems, but Heppner wiJl too, if the pool doesn • t open. Annie Hisler I think that it is a great idea for there to be honor cards. This pro- gram was started last year to reward and encourage good grades . It makes everyone work hard so they can reach their goal . More and roore people are getting them and are caring more about their grades. I hope that younger kids will care more about their grades so when they get into the middle school they will get an honor card for working so hard. I would also like to thank the stores and businesse who are participating in the program. Without them it wouldn' t be possible. Carrie Hargrove I am writing about the swim- ming pool closing this year. Dur- ing the summer a lot of kids go to the pool. They go for something to do and to get cool- ed off. It teaches kids to swim and also about water safety . The pool also gives people a place to swim where there are lifeguards. Places like the lake don't have lifeguards. The lake doesn't have a restricted area to swim in either. The swimming pool is a lot safer place to swim than the lake. I think that the people of Hepp- ner need to find a way to raise some money to fix the pool. Jessica Keersemaker At Heppner Middle School last year a new program was started. The program was started by Mrs. Carlson to encourage kids to do well in school and on their grades. The program is called the Honor Card Program. Students receive a little card with their pic- ture. It shows their name and their grade. The kids that get them can go to a participating store or business and get something free or at a discount. It encourages the people wo get them to appreciate what they can do . The kids really are appreciative of all the businesses that take part in this program. The stores that participate in it are: Orwick Machine Shop, Gardner's Men's Wear, Bank of Eastern Oregon, Murray's Drug, Central Market, Millers Mini Mart, Peterson's Jewelers, Shoe Box, Heppner bowl , Our Place Cafe , Heppner Auto Parts, Court Street Market, Beechers and the Gazette-Times. They all give uper prizes. It's great to see the students and community working together to make our schools even better.
