January 29, 1992 Cardinals down Condon Blue Devils L a d y C a r d in a ls defeat C u lv e r also pulled down 18 boards to By Anne Morter The lone Cardinals added two more to the win column this past weekend, downing Ccndon in a key game on Friday, Jan. 24 and then thumped Culver at home on Saturday, Jan. 25. The Cards now lead the East Division of the Big Sky Conference with a 5-1 league record Their overall mark now stands at 10-3. The Cards worked hard for their 60-51 win over the Condon Blue Devils in Condon. They never trailed in the contest jum ping out to a 6-0 lead and then held a four to six-point margin for the remainder of the game. “ I’m not sure we controlled the game, but we were never behind.” said coach Del LaRue. Mike Garrett was the game’s high scorer with 26 points. He lead the Cardinal rebounding at tack. Ryan Halvorsen and Deacon Heideman each added eight. David Wagenblast handed out seven assists and Garrett grabbed six steals. Deacon Heideman had three blocked shots. lone shot 21 of 55 from the floor for 38 percent while Con don sizzled, hitting 22 of 44 for 50 percent from the field. The Cards were 17 of 28 for 61 per cent from the free throw line while the Blue Devils hit just five of 14 for 36 percent. ‘‘It was a good win, a necessary one,” said coach LaRue. “ It was a good defensive ballgame for us. The kids played hard, they worked as hard as they had in a long time,” he added. By Anne Morter All the players suited down on Saturday Jan. 25 to play Culver, but the Lady Cards were a little off their pre-flu form. Culver led at the end of the first quarter, 10-8, but several steals and lay- ins by Nancy Morter and April Taylor in the second quarter got things rolling, as the Lady Cards opened up a 33-19 halflime lead. It was more of the same as lone went on to defeat Culver 59-39. Nancy Morter led all scorers with 22 points, followed by April Taylor with 11 and Kari Morgan with 10. The Bulldogs outre- bounded their hosts, 35-29. Nan cy Morter paced the Cardinal ef fort with 10. Brandi Ball had three assists, while Morter had six steals and Danielle Stefani and Taylor both had five. The Cards shot 22 of 56 for 39 percent from the field and 13 of 27 for 48 percent from the line. A total of 51 fouls were called in the very physical game. “ The game was decided in the second quarter. We got control and the lead and gradually built on that,” said coach Heideman. “ We didn’t play real smooth. We just weren’t well enough to get things going,” he added. The Lady Cardinals play two games this weekend, hitting the road Friday to take on Echo. That game starts at 6 p.m. On Satur day, Feb. 1, they host Condon with the girls’ varsity game star ting at 4 p.m. “ We’ve got to try to come up with a big win,” says Heideman. lone Middle School Cards run over Condon points for the Cardinals. Jay Coil shot a perfect 25 in the 16-yard event with Jeff Cutsforth, Sherron Woodside, Mike Adams, Curtis Cutsforth and Kelwayne Hague wood trailing with 24. Coil also scored best in the han dicap event with 23 out of 25. Loren W oodside and Jeff Cutsforth placed second with 22’s. Coil and Roger Mortimore each won an Annie Oakley event. It was clear from the tip-off that lone would dominate the game. The Cardinals’ offense worked great with a first period score of 18- 0, lone. Suzy Heideman made eight of her 16 points in the first quarter. In the second half the Cardinals slacked off on both ends of the court. In an attempt to even up the score, lone made only five points in the third quarter. In the final stanza the Cards played the perimeter on offense. Melissa McElligott and Suzy Heideman each scored three point goals. The game ended 35-14. In addition to Heideman’s 16 points she led the Cardinals with seven rebounds and three steals. On January 18 the Cardinals met up with the Heppner Ponies in Heppner in a tough battle that saw Heppner finish with the win, 19- 16. lone started out slow, making only three points in the first quarter. The Ponies led, 6-3. The second quarter looked bet ter with the Cards fighting back to a 9-8 lead. The man-to-man defense worked well, holding Heppner to three points. lone had 13 rebounds and 11 steals in the first half. The third quarter was another close one and lone kept the lead, 13-12. Another low scoring period held each team to four points. The fourth quarter was no bet ter for scoring as the Ponies pull ed out for the win 19-16. lone had 24 rebounds with Melissa McElligott and Becky Wagenblast leading with seven each.
