Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, November 6, 1991 - THREE Fire equipment topic of meeting Heppner City Administrator Gary Marks has slated a meeting concer ning update of fire fighting equip ment for the Heppner Volunteer Fire Department Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. at city hall. The agenda for that evening in- eludes an overview of implications of ballot Measure 5 and funding methods, a tour of the fire equipment at the station, discussion of equip ment needs and potential costs and formation of a prioritized equipment needs list. St. Patrick’s Senior Center Bulletin Board The Heppner Ranger District of the Umatilla National Forest will be hosting an open house to address ac cess management and the forest health situation in the Blue Moun tains on Thursday, November 14 at the St. Patrick’s Senior Center in Heppner. The open house will begin at 8 p.m. Forest Service personnel will be on hand to discuss proposed changes FALL CLEARANCE in forest access management and the forest health on the district Informa tion and displays regarding access management and the proposed 1992 salvage sales will be available for public review. The district invites the public to take this opportunity to stop in, view the proposed projects and become involved in the plann ing process. 3 0 % All nursery stock Fall Bulbs & Flowering Kale are in Children’s health focus of teleconference The Senior Focus group met October 29 in the dining room. Chairper sons Stan Hoobing and Grace Drake reported on the county meeting and tour of the hospital, nursing home and clinic here in Heppner. John Wood, Bud Batty and Everett Keithley have finished putting up the acoustical panels in the dining room. They have also installed a new amplifier and more speakers so announcements may be heard. There were 103 people present for the birthday-Halloween dinner Oct. 30. Twelve meals were taken out. Serving was done by the Nazarene and Seventh Day Adventist Church members. Clayton Ayers won the meal ticket. Gene Cole the door prize and Opal Cook of Hermiston, the guest prize. Merri Reamer brought pumpkins from Boardman. These were carved into Jack-o-lantems by several seniors and used to decorate the sitting room for the Halloween party Thursday evening. The apartment tenants treated 113 children during the evening, the most they have ever had. They all enjoyed the little ones in their costumes. The tenants had their party later, with pie and coffee. The senior bus was filled to capacity for the trip to Hardman for the haunted house Wednesday, Oct. 30. They reported having a great time. The tenants gathered in the sitting room Friday afternoon, Nov. 1, to help Ralph Struthers celebrate his birthday. His wife Barbara served cake and ice cream. Dates to remember: Mondays 1-4 p.m. quilting. The quilters have finished a tied quilt and are making a quilt for the St. Patrick’s celebration and pot holders for the center kitchen. Tues. & Thurs. 10-10:30 a.m. exercise. Nov. 8 Willoughby Hearing Aid Service will be here from 9 a.m. to noon. Nov. 12 the Garden Club will meet at 7 p.m. Nov. 14, the Forest Service will host an open house in the dining room from noon to 8 p.m. The dollaride care is available to take seniors to doctor’s appointments in or out of town. Call the center office 676-9030. Menu for November 13 will be meat loaf, whipped potato, asparagus, fruit, wheat bread and pudding. Members of the Methodist Church will serve. The conference may be viewed in the Morrow County Extension Of fice conference room, 430 Hepp- ner/Lexington Highway (Pettyjohn building) in Heppner. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. for those who wish to get CE credits. The transmission will begin at 10 a.m. The conference will conclude at 1 p.m. Conference organizers have ar ranged for Continuing Education C redits from the follow ing: registered dietitians, registered dietetic technicians, certified home econom ists, certified dietary managers, certified food service employees and american nurses association ($3 fee). For credit you must register on-site prior to view ing the conference. There are no other fees for attendance. Current estimates suggest that one in five children are overweight and one in three have high blood cholesterol levels. Another estimate indicates 5.5 million children under 12 years are now hungry and an ad ditional 6 million at risk of hunger in the U S. The teleconference will explore the critical factors in GREEN FEED children’s health in which adults make a difference: nutrition, health, safe use of medicine and exercise.
