Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, June 26, 1991 - THREE Joint churches hold Vacation Bible school this week Left-right: Kylee Disque, Joshua Gutierrez and Kelly Straley join in singing at the joint Episcopal, Lutheran and Methodist churches Vacation Bible School held this week. Sixty-eight children are registered at Bible school and have donated 84 pounds of canned goods and paper products to donate to the Neighborhood Center food baskets. The week’s goal is 395 pounds. Teachers are the Rev. Gerry Etchison, the Rev. Stan Hoob- ing, Lea Calvert, Carley Drake, Ellen Rollis and Rhonda Majors. Good turnout for fishing derby Jarrod Clark displays a string of fish he caught at the fishing derby. Clark won first prize for biggest bass. Forty-eight area children par ticipated in the Fishing Derby held on June 9 at Willow Creek Dam. Jarrod Clark of Heppner won the prize for biggest bass and Emily Bergstrom, also of Heppner snagg ed the biggest bluegill. The wettest fisherm an honors went to Christopher Hagzlett. Results are as follows: Bluegill, four and under: first- Emily Bergstrom. Bass, 5-7 years: first-Rhonda Wilhelm; second-Amanda Wilhelm; third-Trevor Rhea. Bluegill 5-7 years: a tie for first between Brian G utierrez and Chelsea Bredemeier; a tie for second Desiree Kandra and Schmeltzer between Paula Spicerkuhn and Chelsea Bredemeier. Bass 8-10 years: first-Desiree Schmeltzer; second-David Piper; third-Ross VanEtta. Bluegill, 8-10 years: first-Tracy Rankin. Jarrod Clark placed first in the bass, 11-13 year age group. The Heppner Lions club donated prizes for the derby. Helping were Jon Germond, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Pendleton; Jackie Dougan, U.S. Forest Service, Ukiah; Doug Dougan, Ukiah; Greg Lynch, Johanne Wood, Alan Scott and Becky Nourse, all U.S. Forest Service, Heppner, and Steve Rhea, Lions club secretary-treasurer. Annual Olden family picnic held By Anne Morter The annual Olden Family reunion and picnic was held in The Dalles on June 9, with many descendants of Menzo and Mary Jane Olden in at tendance. Menzo and Mary Jane homesteaded south of lone in 1884. Members of the Jessie Olden Henderson family attending were: Lonnie and LaVeme Henderson, Larry Henderson and Jeanette and Ladd Henderson with sons, Mark and Doug, all of Hood River; Betty McTavish with children, Marrisa and Joe of Gresham, Helen and Grant Henderson of Summerville, Oregon and Durinda Fries of Ken newick, WA. Aquatic fitness classes planned Aquatic fitness classes in both lone and Heppner have been scheduled to begin July 9. The classes will be held for six weeks on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 7 p.m. Instructors are Cathy Halvorsen, 422-7107 and Nella Britt. 676-9659. Pre-registration is required and registration forms are available at the post office or from the instructor. Pre-register by sending the form and $20 tuition to Sue Warren Star Rt. 2, lone, 97843. Lions Club President David Sykes (right) and Sec./Tres. Steve Rhea are ready to set up the Heppner Lions Club - Day care fireworks stand. The stand opens this Friday and will offer fireworks for sale through July 3. The stand will be located at its normal location on Main St. next to Spicer and Kuhn’s office. Proceeds from sale o f the fireworks go toward operation of the CHEVROLET Heppner Day Care Center, and for worthwhile community projects through the Lions Club. The stand is scheduled to be open on Friday, June 28 from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m .; Saturday and Sunday June 29 and 30 from 12 noon to 8 p.m.; Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, July 1, 2 and 3 from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. and Thursday, July 4 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eva Griffith family holds reunion Prairie City; Karen Griffith, Hepp ner; Toni Chitty and daughter Eva, Salt Lake City, UT; Tami Toll and sons Robert and Ryan Johlke, Pendleton; Terry Toll and Lauri Boone and daughter Leah Ihle, Prineville; Bob and Judy Cunn ingham and daughter Shannon, Everett, WA; Glenda Robinson, Heppner; and great-grandchild Heather Hughes, Prairie City.
