The Presidential Academic Fitness Awards were presented to 11 sixth graders and four eighth graders at the Academic Awards Assembly for Heppner Elementary and Middle School June 5. “ T his aw ard is the most prestigious academic recognition available to students of this age,” said coordinator Linda Shaw. “ It is difficult to earn because the student must demonstrate both ability and ef fort over a period of two or more years.” For the period prior to the award (grades 4, 5 and 6 for sixth graders and grades 7 and 8 for eighth graders) the student must maintain a 3.3 grade point average. In addi tion, the student must score at least at the 80th percentile level (com posite score of math, reading, and language arts) on a recent achieve ment test. Awards for effort may be given to 10 percent of the number qualifying for the Presidential Award. Students presented with the Presidential Academic Fitness Awards for 1990-91 were: Eigth grade: Ethan Burnside, Dani Hill, Jenny Krein, John Qualls and Tracy Blodgett. Roundup use okayed The Oregon Wheat Growers League has received word from the Oregon Department of Agriculture that the application for section 18 use o f Roundup (glyphosate) for ropewick or wiper application has been approved. Along with that approval are restrictions and guidelines including: a one-time application of one gallon per 50 acres; no application within 30 days of harvest; volunteer rye must be six or more inches taller than the wheat to make application; wheat is in or just emerging from the boot; weeds cannot be wet, the EPA .must be immediately informed of any adverse effects resulting from this use; and this exemption expires June 30, 1991. A maximum of 25,000 rye-infested acres of wheat in Oregon counties east of the Cascade Mountains may be treated. Senior class donate benches Students honored for academic awards The Academic Awards Assembly for Heppner Elementary and Middle School was held Wednesday, June 5. Students in grades 2-8 were recognized for participation in special programs, academic ex cellence, exceptional effort, and per formance in academic skills contests. Refreshments were provided follow ing the assembly by the Parents’ Club.
