■ i - m FOUR - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, May 15, 1991 Nancy Morter qualifies Five lone tracksters advance to state for state tennis meet By Anne Morter Five lone tracksters advanced to the state track meet this weekend on the basis of their performances at the district meet last weekend. In dividually, Jame Cupps qualified in both the high jump and the 300 hurdles. Cupps finished second in the high jump with a season’s best jump of 4 10” . She also finished se cond in the 300 hurdles with a time of 54.21. Cupps set a new school record in the preliminaries where she ran 52.7. The old school record was set by her sister. Mary Cupps in 1989. First and second place finishers advance to the State 1A meet. Other placers in the meet were April Taylor who placed fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:46.39and Wendy Anderson, who was fifth in the shot with a throw of 30'6” . The girls’ team scored 22 points to finish seventh in the meet Weston-McEwen took first place in the meet with 108 points In boys’ competition. Deacon Heideman was the district champion in the discus, where he threw 134’9Vi” . Because of a previous commitment. Heideman will not be attending the state meet. The Cards will send their 1600-relay team, who surprised everyone by cutting eight seconds off their best time to finish second in 3:47.44. Relay team members are Gabe Garcia, Mike Garrett. David Wagenblast and Mac Lovett. The Cards scored the remainder of their 33 points with nonqualifying finishes. Garcia was third in the 400 in 54.35. The 400-relay team was fifth in 47.96, David Wagenblast finished fifth in the 800. 2:11.03; Mac Lovett was fifth in the 200, 23.%; and sixth in the 100, 12.1; and Justin Miller was fifth in the 3000, 11 00.38. Powerful Wahtonka won the boys’ portion of the meet with 134 points. “ I was really pleased with the way all the kids performed at the district meet,” said coach Del LxiRue. ‘‘The relay team was very determined (to qualify) and so was Janie.” he added. The state meet is this Friday and Saturday at Springfield High School. Willie DeBoer had a sixth place finish in the 200 m. Munkers takes first Angela and Tiffany Munkers, daughters of Barry and Mary Ann Munkers of Lexington won the open and junior barrel racings at the Arl ington rodeo held May 4 and 5. Angela, 10, was the youngest competitor against women from all over the Northwest. She won $217 for first place in the open barrels on Sunday and was second in the average for both days. Tiffanie, 12, received a beautiful Kenny Hansen buckle and two checks for the junior barrels. Both girls have been competing in rodeo events since they were three years old. They currently compete in barrel racing, goat tying, poles and breakaway roping. 422-7410 I Nancy Morter qualified for the state tennis tournament on the basis of her third-place finish at last weekend’s district tennis tournament held at the Tri-Cities Court Club. Morter upset the number-one seed, Mel Tarter of Umatilla, in the semi finals on her way to a third-place finish. The top three seeds advance to the state tournament. On Friday, Morter defeated Kim Guyer of Mac Hi, 6-0, 6-3 and then came right back to down Kristy Hoch of Umatilla, 6-4, 6-3. On Saturday morning, she wore down Mel Tarter 7-5, 6-2, in a match that lasted two hours. After a half-hour break, she was back on the court again for another marathon match. This time, Morter fell to Shandie Johnson, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. That loss forced her into a “ playback” situa tion, where the number-two and three players had to play off for the second spot. This match came just minutes after finishing the match with Johnson, leaving her without much energy. Lucy McCoy of Sher man County defeated Morter, 6-0, 6- 3 in that final match, putting Nan cy into the number three slot. Brent Sheirbon advanced to the semi-finals before being eliminated from play. On Friday, Sheirbon defeated James Purvis of Umatilla, 7- 5, 6-1. and then downed Art Pat ton of Sherman County, 7-6,6-3. On Saturday, he ran into Javier Ingles of Umatilla and lost 4-6, 6-1, 6-1. He was eliminated when he fell to Barrel racing clinic scheduled There will be a Barrel Racing Clinic on Saturday, May 18 at the Wranglers arena in Heppner. Besides garden club members, guests for the day wee Katherine Lindstrom. Thelma Lindner, Beth Bryant, Pat Wright and Darcie Robinson. After looking around the nursery and selecting plants, those present went to the Golden Corral for a no host luncheon before returning home. The next club meeting will be a no-host luncheon on June 12 at Beechers where Thelma Roe of Her miston will show how to use dried flowers in gifts and decorations for the home. Anyone interested should contact a garden club member. The clubs observation of Garden Week the first week of June will be under the supervision of Birdine Tullis and Pat Pettyjohn.
