Feb. 9, the lone Cards got a bit more of a game than they bargained for against Cascade Locks, squeaking out a win, 61-59. lone held a 36-21 halftime edge but the Pirates came out gunning in the third, scoring 20 points to lone’s six. Cascade Locks took the lead in the fourth quarter and then swapped it back and forth a couple of times before lone got ahead for good. Gabe Garcia was the high scorer of the game with 17 points, follow ed by Ryan Halvorsen with 13 and Mike Garrett with 12. Rebounds were few and far bet ween with both teams hitting the floor but the Cards ended up with the edge, 29-25. Mike Garrett led the at tack with 10 followed by Ryan Halvorsen with eight and Aaron Heideman with six. David Wagenblast dished out nine assists with Gabe Garcia adding five and Garrett contributing four. Garrett paced the Cards in the steal depart ment with four. Deacon Heideman had two blocked shots, bringing his league season total to 52. Garrett also had three blocked shots. The Cards were red hot from the floor, hitting 24 o f49 for49 percent. The Pirates weren’t too shabby in that department either, making 25 of In the Service Marine Pvt. Will J. Martin, son of Carl and Geraldine Martin, Hepp ner, has completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego. During the 13-week training cy cle, Martin was taught the basics of battlefield survival. He was in troduced to the typical daily routine that he will experience during his enlistment and studied the personal 56 for 45 percent. At the line the Cards were seven of 11 for 64 per cent and Cascade Locks was five for eight for 62 percent. Coach Del LaRue said that Cascade Locks is a good hustling ball club that made the Cards work hard. They effectively shut off the middle on the Cards, said LaRue. “ We shot well overall,” added LaRue, noting that Gabe Garcia knocked in five for nine from three- point land and shot 50 percent overall. Mike Garrett was six of eight from the floor for 75 percent and Deacon Heideman was four of seven for 57 percent. He also com mended his bench for a strong con tribution, especially Aaron Heideman who came off the bench strong in both games over the weekend. The Cards enter the district tour nament as the number one seed from the East Division, a spot that LaRue’s teams have never occupied in his 20 years at lone. The Cards meet Sherman at 8 p.m. on Friday night at the Umatilla gym. The win ner automatically advances to the state tournament. The loser gets another shot at state on Saturday, meeting the winner of the Condon- Cascade Locks game at 6 p.m. The games will be broadcast on KOHU FM in Hermiston. and professional standards tradi tionally exhibited by Marines. He participated in an active physical conditioning program and gained proficiency in a variety of military skills, including first aid, ri fle marksmanship and close order drill. Teamwork and self-discipline were emphasized throughout the training cycle. A 1989 graduate of Heppner High School, he joined the Marine Corps in September 1990. The Heppner Mustangs captured the Columbia Basin Conference championship Saturday night on the road with an 88-66 win over the Stanfield Tigers. The win, the Mustangs' tenth against only one loss, makes their season record 16-3 and will send Heppner into the district tournament February 22 and 23, in Pendleton, as the first place team. The victory in Stanfield was much tougher than it looked on paper. The second division Tigers stuck with the Mustangs and trailed only 57-52 wiht one quarter left. Nine players scored for Heppner in the 31-point fourth quarter and the final score wasn’t an indication of the closeness of the game. Senior Doug Devin had a fine game for Heppner, hitting 7-10 from the field and 7-10 from the line, for 22 points. Devin was high with seven rebounds also. Jason Britt capped off two weeks of strong performances with 20 points, four rebounds and five steals. Rick Osmin added 12 points for the winners, the seventh game in a row he’s been in double figures. Vance Crafton, a 6’ 3” junior and the Tigers’ franchise, hit for 29 points and Ace Huff added 14 points for Stanfield. The Mustangs close out the regular season on the road Saturday, February 16, against the Wasco County Redsides. No. 33 is Ryan Halvorsen lone grabs first place in Big Sky East The Fillies traveled to Stanfield Saturday, Feb. 9 and ended their weekend victorious in a close game against the Tigers beating them by one point in a low scoring game, 37-36. The Fillies came out in the first half a little slow but managed to take the lead and keep it. At halftime the Fillies were ahead 19-16. Coming back from halftime Stan field rallied together to make a come back. Meanwhile sisters Holly and Heather Eckman worked together for the Fillies to score 10 points for their team to tie the game at 29. “ The bench play o f Amy Brownfield, Jodi Wilson and Becky Norton kept us in the game in the fourth qarter and enabled me to rest my starters,” stated coach Mark Dowdy. Freshman Holly Eckman scored 12 points while her sister Heather added nine. Nikki Brisbois was tough on the boards pulling down 10. Amy Greenup and Becky Nor ton helped out with five each. “ I was glad to come away with a win. After last night’s game with Weston-McEwen we came out play ing a little flat,” said coach Dowdy. “ Stanfield is probably the team we’ll see at District in two weeks and it will be good to have them so fresh in our minds.” The Fillies will go into district tournament in second place in the CBC league. Photo by Wayne Hams lone player shoots over Condon player By Anne Morter By Pete Pearson The Heppner JV boys team finish ed their season with a 12 and three record after trouncing Stanfield, 65-44, Feb. 5 and running by Weston-McEwen, 73-64 last Friday night. Stanfield started off strong, using a full court press to take a surpris ing 10-2 lead midway through the first quarter. In the second quarter Heppner started breaking the press and got Len Brittner the ball on fast breaks, as the Mustangs pulled away. Brittner finished with 24 points, Pete Pearson added eight. Against Weston-MeEwen, Friday night, Pete Pearson got the game go ing for the first five points of the game. From there. Shane Munkers took over and scored 17 points to take game high honors. The final score was closer than the game ac tually was, Weston-McEwen made three three-pointers and a regular basket to close the gap from 20 to nine in the fourth quarter. Len Britt ner added 14 points for the Mustangs and Scott Coe had 12. On Friday night, Feb. 8, the Cards made up a nine-point halftime deficit with increased defensive pressure and some hot shooting by Gabe Gar cia, eventually winning the game. 66-63. Condon did some hot- shooting on their end too, hitting 11 * three-pointers in the game. Gabe Garcia led the Cardinal scor ing attack with 18 points. Deacon Heideman added 15 and Mike Gar rett tossed in 11. The Cards outre- bounded the Devils. 47-38, with Mike Garrett grabbing 13. Aaron Heideman came off the bench to pull down 10 boards with Ryan Halvorsen pulling down eight and Deacon Heideman adding seven more. Deacon also had eight block ed shots in the game. David Wagenblast handed out eight assists and he and Garrett each grabbed four steals. The Cardinals shot 43 percent from the floor, making 23 of 54 while Condon hit 21 of 57 for 37 percent. From the free throw line, the Cards capitalized on 17 of their 30 chances for 57 percent. Condon hit six of 10 for 60 percent from the stripe. “ It was an excellent gam e," said coach Del LaRue, commenting that both teams were fired up for the game. He noted that it was good for the Cards to find out they could come back from a half time deficit to win. “ The kids really wanted that first place spot,” said LaRue. This game was the one that put the wraps on the first place position for lone. The couple cordially invites friends and relatives to their reception at 5:30 p.m. at the home of Faye Seitz on the Heppner - Condon Highway. Gun club members hold work day Around a third of the Morrow County Gun Club membership turn ed out for Saturday’s work day. After completing the projects they enjoyed a couple hours of shooting. On Sunday Kel wayne Hague wood and Loren Woodside were field-high with their perfect 25’s against 23 other shooters in the 16-yard league competition. Haguewood and Jay Coil match ed with 23’s, both downing their targets from the 20-yard line, to lead the handicap event. Other shooters competing were; Mike Gorman. A.J. Tamasky, Sher- ron Woodside, Jeff Cutsforth, Jason Britt. Don Barber. Jack Hentges, Jay Coil, Mike Adams, Roger Mor- timore, Gary and Jeremy Clark, Pat Lovgren, Brian Thompson. Rob Ashbeck. Tim Hedman, Curt Day, Greg Grant, Jason and Jake Maben, Dave Campbell, Stacy Lovgren and Joe Yocom. Roger Mortimore and Jay Coil teamed together to win two ‘Buddy Shoots' over four other pair of gunners. Shooting the ‘Annie Oakley' as the last event of the day.
