Forrest Burkenbine B urkenbinc said that the fire started around 4 a m Feb 5 He said that Heppner, Lexington and lone firem en battled the h la /e at the Wagon Wheel for almost three hours and believed to have it contained un til tJie w md pic ked up and spread the fire to the adjoining businesses "O n c e it got to C e n tra l." said Burkenbine. " i t was com pletely gut ted in a h a lf hour " Power was out in Heppner fo r about an hour as a result o f the tire A ccording to Burkenbine there were su fficie n t fire trucks and man pow er to fig h t the fire , but the w ind prevailed In addition to 14 Heppner firem en, seven firefighters from lone and five fro m Lexington assisted Burkenbine said the state fire mar shal determ ined the cause o f the fire to be a com pressor above a w alk in cooler at the W agon W heel w hich shorted out " U s u a lly a compressor w o n 't do what it d id .
