T m 4 Suit against school board dismissed A suit filed June 20, 1080. in the wake of the teachers' strike against the Morrow County School District txwrdmembers Dwayne Carroll. Bill Doherty, Jerry McElligott, Marcia Kemp, Bob Mahoney and Julie Ashheck. by seven Morrow County residents has been dismissed in part, according to the Morrow County Superintendent Doyle McCaslin County residents, David Alldritt, Ralph DeBoer, Ed Glenn, Glcnna Greer, John Dawson. Kelly Wright and Richard Wright, claimed the hoard violated legal duties through misappropriation of funds when the hoard hired “ at least three illegal professional strike breakers,“ com mitted traud by misrepresentation to parents of sludcrua-the qualification o f replacem ent teachers; and violated state election laws follow ing (he resignation of school board member Joe Stevens on Feb 2 1, I9S9 In a telephone hearing on Dec 28 the charge of fraud was dismissed Still pending arc the questions of employment of strike breakers ami violation of election laws Although the suit did mu mention a dollar amount, it did indicate that the group was going after hoard members' personal assets, and not district money The suit asked that individual board members be ordered to repay to the district all money spent to “ recruit, solicit, and advertise for strike breakers and to pay profes sional strike breakers for their illegal services," during the strike The suit id so fiskol that hotirrt members p*v plaintiffs attorney’s fees The suit said the hoard conducted a “ fraudulent campaign" to parents Power outage caused by vandal shooting pole A power outage that lasted more than three hours and forced closure of schools was caused by u person shooting insulators on a power pole, according th Fred Toombs, Colum bia Basin Electric manager Shots fired at seven insulators on a string on a power pole caused a bd thousand volt line from Board man to Baseline Road to go out, said Toombs Toombs said that the pole was in the desert area about a mile west of Hoardman Farms "It was a very inaccessible area.” he said Power went out at 9 a m and was not restored until around 12:45. fhe outage affected Heppner, lone and larxington Schools were closed at 12 30 p.m. "Someone is going to get killed doing this,” said Tiximhs. explain ing that shooting a power pole could cause a power line to fall and seriously endanger or kill someone. Smith and Wiser of Portland Dorian Forrar. an employee for the Morrow County School District and Lance Marvin, a student at Heppner High, conceived and designed the enframe sign which represents Heppner Elementary and Middle School facilities For the past few years Dorian has enhanced the landscaping for schools in Heppner He and principal Don Cole felt a need for a sign that would represent the educational facilities and strengthen the landscaping around the school grounds Lance Marv in created the graphics for the sign last year and Lance and Dtrek Osmin managed to complete the majority of the work Lance, who was a national art awards winner for two years, used wild life and farming figures in his *1 project design, these emblems representing the state of Oregon This school year the students in Mr Forrar'* vocational education program completed the project with Kevin Scott helping to put the finishing touches on the new landmark Weather Report by C*y of Tun Thurs. frt Sal. Circuit Judge Robert Abrams imposed a 40-year prison sentence on Hinton for ihc sodomy convictions He also ordered that Hinton serve a mandatory minimum 20^year prison sentence before he ing released on parole Judge Abrams also revoked pro hat ion which had been imposed on Hinton for a I*485 attempted rape conviction, and ordered that he serve a five-year prison term on thal charge, with a 2-W year mandatory minimum sentence This sentence is also to run consecutively to the 40 years imposed on the sodomy con victions He further ordered that Hinton pay for the costs of treatment for the victim following his release from prison only one of many commodity groups meeting that day The SWCD has two speakers, one talking on ihc geology of Morrow County . and the other discussing groundwater They meet at It) a m.
