HI, of Portland, former owner operator of Beecher Restaurant and Lounge in lone, died Wednesday. Oct II. 1989 at St Vincent Hospital in Portland Memorial services will he held at the United Church of Christ in lone at 2.30 p m. Thursday. Mr Emert was born June II. 1908 at Hay Station, Washington He attended school at Teko. Wash and Sprague. Wash In the early 1930's he entered the U S Marine Corps and in the late 1930's liaised to Oregon During World War II. he worked as a machinist at the Portland shipyards and after the war went to work at the Umatilla Ordnance Depot He operated a meat market in Albany and worked as a commercial fisherman in Hoquim. Wash . before moving to Seymour. Tcnn , where he farmed for IK years In 1930, he m oved to lone and was owncr/opcrator of the Beecher Restaurant and laiunge He retired in 19 8 1 and moved to Portland Mr Emert sang in the choir and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Seymour He was a member of the Heppner lik e Lodge for 43 years and the Seymour Masonic lodge for 40 years Survivors include his wife, Betty at home; stepchildren, Alfrcda Porter of Hendersonville, Tenn., lorrainc Ball of lone, and Dale Sherman of Portland, sisters Beulah Dunham of Brightwood. Patricia Pettyjohn of lone anil Blanche Ward of Cascade, Idaho, and brothers Clarence of Roscburg and Dee of W alla W alla. eight step- grandchildren Four brothers. Alfred, Phill. Mr. McGough was bom Sept 21, |9 lb in Wenatchee, Wash to Bert and Edna McGough He graduated from Wenatchee High School and at tended Whitman College On Nov 12. 1941. he married Mary Webb in Santa Rosa. CA He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in I‘*41 and served as captain for tour years in active duty. From 1943 to 1933 he and his family farmed in the Heppner area They moved to Walla Walla in 1933 and farmed in the Prescott area un til his death He is survived by his wife at home, a daughter Julie Drishcll of Walla Walla, Wa . two sons Jim McGough of Prescott. Wa and Bill McGough of Opihikao. Hawaii, brothers Dr Stan McGough of Spray and Dr Ken McGough of Man/amta a sister Ians Williams of Wenatchee. October 31. 1989 in the public works office at Iexington For specifications please call 676 90b 1 ext 17 Morrow County does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex. religion, age and handicapped status in employment or the provision of service* Published October 18. 1989 M ark Hagelt If you’ve been in either the Elkhom M ountains or the Eagle Cap Wilderness in the Wallowa Mountains of northeast Oregon w ithin the last few years, you may have imagined seeing vime odd-looking white specks mov ing among the distant rtmrock walls near the crestsof the highest peaks If so. you probably rubbed your eyes and looked again to check if they were still there, Odds are. your eyes were not play ing tricks on you, but that you had spot led one or more of the Rocky Mountain goats that are now freely roaming these two mountain ranges These shaggy, snow white daredevils are often quite visible as they scale the near vertical cliffs of this, their preferred habitat, and have provided onlookers of the area with hours of viewing excitement According to information from the Oregon Department of Fish and W ildlife (ODFW), Oregon got into the mountain gnat business in I9N) with the introduction of six animals into the Wallowa Mountains The goats flourished at first, but were nearly extirpated in the mid- I'XKK from a com bination of over hunting and inbreeding within the small herd Efforts to rebuild the goal program in northeast Oregon began again in ihe early |98<K when the department introduced new goat populations in to the Elkhorn Mountains west of Baker and began supplementing the Wallowa Mountain herd with additional releases And while the new Elkhorn herd appears to be building nicely. officials say ihe cliff cruisers in the Wallow as still may not be doing as well as they could be' "They're very tough to surv ive up there, so it's tough to tell much about them ," said Vic Coggins. Wallowa District Wildlife Biologist for ODEW, j "but it still appears that we're not having much in the way of kid surv ival " Coggins said inbreeding often results in a lack of genetic variability which kan lead to low productivity rates "Sometimes you get the populations that are very closely related and survival of the young really drops off," he said To strengthen bloodlines, Coggins said ihe department has in the Iasi five years made three new releases of goats from herds in Washington and Alaska, including I7ncw arrivals from Washington's Olympic Moun lams as recently as last July And while he is hopeful the new releases will show increased reproduction rates within the herd. Coggins says it ; is still too early to see much results from the "new blood "W e should have the genetic diversity now" he said "W e're |ust go ing to have to wait and see if that was really. in fact. ihe problem up there Coggins believes the hetd now contains upwards of 30 animals. Nit says he can't be sure due to incomplete survey results The Elkhom mountain goats, on the other hand, have experienced very few- problems since their introduction in 1983 "A s far as we can determine they're doing pretty good," said Jerry Grover, assistant wildlife biologist of the Baker district "W e know we've had reproduction every year since we started putting them up there At least the people who go up there don't have any trouble finding them, and they usually find them in bunches of anywhere from five to nine- animals Three transplant efforts have resulted in a total of 2 1 goafs being relocated to the Elkhorns from herds in northern Idaho. Washington and Alaska According to (»over, the goats adapted quite well to their new surroun dings, with the brief exception of some of the Alaskan animals "They didn't know what mountains w ere." Grover mused “ They had lived their lives right down on the beach ami ate kelp and stuff like that Lhen we brought them over here and put them up in the mountains, and some of them ran right down to the lowlands looking for the «Kean " t Grover said that for a short while, disoriented goats were sighted as low as Phillips Reservoir near Sumpter and in the Granite Greenhorn area at the base of the Elkhorns While Grover estimated the present Elkhom goat population to N- in the neighNirhood of 40 animals, he said an initial agreement with the Forest Service limits the department to managing no more than 30 goats in the area, due to the discovery a "suspected endangered plant" species there "If these (goats) really start multiplying and obv lously get up to around 73 or 100 animals we may think aN>ut harvesting a few of them."
