It’s not like I haven't tned a few dif ferent things I started out a farmer, sold shoes and painted houses to S« through college, practiced law for 15 years, started a wood box company. a winery and now hack to farming, herbs and flowers My standard answer to die inquiry "E d . just what are you going to do when you grow up?" with “ I don't even know wtiai I'm going to do next " I have figured out that there are some jobs I would do. not on your life Take the gal who proof reads this column Now that job" requires a great deal of skill in the use of the language, attention to the most nunute detail and immanent persistence to make me look like a proficient writer She does that job very well, so well that I am both surprised and pleased with the result. I couldn't do that job. on your life My custom hay harvester friends are a unique breed With swathers, rakes, bailers and harrow beds, working for several different growers, these fellows arc masters at keeping iheir customer* happy while at the same time keeping a schedule which permits harvest of everyone's hay at something like the right time Seems everyone wants to cut or hale on die same day and each grower thinks he should have priority over the other It's a constant struggle, with every grower nuking immediate demands and the custom operator must jockey those demands to nuke vime sense (Hit of chaos I couldn't do that I'd lose my temper and tell some of them to go fly a kite They would and I'd be out of business Be a custom harvester ’ Not on your life I've dabbled in elective politics a time or two, without substantial suc cess. Good thing loo, since I don't think I could do that either I've watched two local politic tans rcccndy. b»<h with some large measure of admiration One, faced with rising opposition to a position he had taken v>mc months ago. refused to change that position He stood by the early position because he continued to believe in the process, and he continued to believe that position was both in the public interest and met with public approval Truly an admirable trait in a politician But he was all alone in his deliberative body To some he looked kind of silly, casting the one dissen ting vote It took courage to stand by his convictions and not give in to the political wind of the moment I like that in an elected official even though his position was different than my own The other fellow was on the prevailing side, but that's not his mark in my book He had the courage (or some would call it lack of gixnl judge ment) to drop in the coffee shop this morning That's happened before and it was no different this morning He's the butt of all jokes, criticized by nearly everyone for every problem, big or small and the demands for action range from the most insignificant to the absurd And he took it pretty g»x»d naturedly. as usual, without going out of his way to offend anyone He was serious about the serious stuff, joked about the rest of it and went away with another little look at what's on the minds of his constituents I like that a lot But I couldn't do cither job Not on your life Heppner Police Report i ix tT iu m m m .P i Not On Your Life How do you react when you see a Public Hearing Notice ’ Du you ig nore it think it doesn't apply to you. prefer someone else handled it wish you could he a part of it hut feel you lack (he knowledge, or rum to the TV schedule'1 Hearings seem to be a large part of the Morrow County activity lately with (he dam.
