Despite the deadline, there arc alternatives for motorists faced with a late season snowstorm, said Paul M ather. H ighw ay D iv is io n maintenance services engineer. “ We may have a late snowfall in the mountain passes. It's always possible," Mather said. "There arc other options the motorists have such as tire chains and all weather radials These arc not only very good alter natives, but they do very little damage to the roadway compared to studded tires ” Highway Division research has found that studded tires provide slightly more traction on ice. but arc no more effective on snow, and even levs effective on wet pavement, than all weather radial tires Mather said studded tires cause ruts in the pavement, resulting in water buildup and an increased danger o f hydroplanning by vehicles in wet weather Studs also remove skid resistant gnxives and pavement markings State officials estimate that studd ed tires cause SI 4 million worth o f damage to state highways each year Oregon law allows the use o f studded tires from Nov I to April 30 4-H club holds ‘Kiss the Pig’ Contest The Desert Pegasis 4 H Horse Club is holing a Kiss the Pig' con test.
