IWV • FIVE FiHies eonclude regular season play By Jill Conklin The Heppner Fillies concluded regular season play with a 44 38 win over the Wahtonka i agios February 17 Heppner tumped out to an early lead behind sis first period points from Sandi Turner A fter holding Wahtonka to us [»unis the Fillies led 12-6 after one quarter Heppner got into foul trouble dur ing the second quarter which led to e» sy points for die hagles Wahtonka connected on five o f eight free vhias However, the Fillies were able to overcome the disadsantage at the chanty stripe, and scored 11 points lo take a commanding 2 3 -13 lead at intermission Tami Lindsay came alive to score s u points in the third period to help Heppner to their largest lead, 15 points Although a box and one defense slowed Turner during the quarter it couldn't slow the rest o f the Fillies W ith only one quarter left it appeared that Heppner had stolen another win Wahtonka seemed to vslve Hcpp- ner's press, which had forced them to numerous turnovers in the third period, and mounted a comeback. February 14. and heal the Umatilla V i k i n g s '2 60 The Vikings stayed right with the Mustangs in the first quarter and on ly trailed by one point after one quarter o f play Dick Devin scored fiv e points w h ile three other Mustangs scored four points in the quarter The Mustangs increased their lead in the second quarter as they outscored Um atilla 18-12 Seven Mustangs scored in the period as Heppner took a 39-32 lead into halftime Heppner came out in the third quarter and shut down the Vikings offense as Um atilla only scored five points while the Mustangs, behind Bryan Padherg'* seven points in the period, increased their lead to 56-37 The Vikings mounted a comeback in die fourth quarter hut the Mustang lead was too much for Um atilla to overcome and Heppner held on to the victory.
