U n r m h r r 7, IW H - F IV E Local child wins magazine award Laurel Wcbtoer-Gray age 13. o f Lexington. received second p n /e in the September 1988 C ricket League' international poetry com petition sponsored by C ricket Magazine in the 10-14 year old divi sion For this contest, entrants were asked to write a poem about an ob ject in the night sky Laurel's name appears in the December. 1988 issue o f the award winning children's magazine Cncket. the Magazine for children has been called the "New Yorker of children's literature.** It features the best short stones, poems, and a r ticles by the world's finest children's authors and it is illustrated by the best artists from here and abmad Kach month Cncket sponsors a different and unique wnnng and magazine Laurel's poem follows The C elestial M oon Amongst the heavens with stars of all sizes From the hon/on the crescent moon nses To engulf the sky w ith arms open wide Like a giant smile tipped on its side The Moon in all its celestial grace Shines down on us with its benevolent face To peer down on Farth w ith blaz mg eyes Interrupting the quiet calm o f the night skies Against the black o f Night's dusky cape. It reflects the Sun's glory with its crescent shape Its sue looks larger than the other stars Since it's miles closer to the world we call ours All through the night it dances across the sky From side to side in a seeming blink o f an eye And when the night ends, dawn drawing near. It falls over the hon/on like a slip- sliding tear drawing competition for its readers, with seven to eight hundred entries pounng in each time from en thusiastic Cricket readers Some come from as far away as Africa and Australia All stories, poems and drawings arc judged in two age brackets 3-9 and 10-14 year olds Winners receive pn/es and recogni tion. and the best entries are publish ed in the Cncket league pages of the Heppner Community Choir will entertain After the meeting there w ill be a C h ristm as g ift exchange and refreshments All members are cn couraged to attend Chamber lighting contest to be held M O V IE Stop in and look over our selection 55 Titles in stock now.
