Washington, broke into the rural home of Robert Farmer, age 70. and Barbara Farmer, age 71, in order to commit a burglary Finding the couple at home. Tucker simply crept into their bedrooms and. without warning, shot each in the face at point blank range Tucker was anested by the Polk County Sheriffs Office in December of 1*287 He was indicted by the Grand Jury for multiple counts of ag gravated murder, robbery and burglary As District Attorney for Polk County it became my duty to prosecute the case As you arc pro bably aware, death penalty cases arc among the most difficult and com plicated cases in Oregon. I felt that in order to completely prepare the case I would need the assistance of an experienced career prosecutor I asked my friend. Morrow County District Attorney Jeff Wallace, to help Over the last ten months Jeff has given up his evenings and weekends in order to help me prepare for the case When the trial began in Oc tober. Jeff stayed in Dallas handling significant portions of the evidence presentation He was also doing his job for Morrow County by working nights and commuting home weekends On October 17 the jury found Tucker guilty of aggravated murder, robbery and burglary On November *2 the same jury sentenc ed Tucker to the death penalty I would at this time like to public ly express my gratitude to Jeff Wallace for his invaluable help in this case, and to the people of Mor | Congratulations on your row County for allow ing Jeff to do 1 2nd place at State. Deputies responded to the Board- man area in reference to a possible disturbance Call wax unfounded Morrow County deputy respond ed to a disturbance call in the Board- man area Subjects were contacted and problem was resolved; Morrow County Sheriff s office dispatched the Boardman Fire Department to 110 Park Ave . report of a Hue fire Residence was found to he o k Nov 30: Morrow County Sheriffs office dispatched the Boardman ambulance to a rural Boardman residence on Wilson Road for an unknown illness One subject was transported to Good Shepherd Hospital; Morrow County Sheriff s office dispatched the Boardman ambulance to a residence in Boardman for a possible heart attack Subject was transported to Good Shepherd. Morrow County dispatched the Heppner ambulance to 320 S Gilnawe where a transport was made to Pioneer Memorial Hospital Dec I : Morrow County Sheriff s office dispatched the Boardman am bulance to an automobile accident at railroad crossing on Hwy 730 Two subjects were transported to Good Shepherd hospital I>cc. 2: Monow County Sheriff s office deputy and Boardman Police department assisted Hcrmiston Police department in pursuit of vehicle. Morrow County deputy respond cd to Lexington area to investigate a possible traffic problem. Morrow County deputy began in vest igat ion of report of theft in Ir- rigon area No estimate of value is reported at this time; Morrow County deputy began in vestigation of a report of two separate incidents where the same victim had been harrassed; Morrow County deputy assisted Boardman Police department with report of a transient subject in the Boardman area Subject was non violent, taken to the Detox Center in Pendleton Dec 3: Morrow County deputy assisted Boardman Police depart menl w ith call of open ikx»r at a local business Manager contacted In secure door and check premise* Door was secured with no apparent theft. Morrow County Sheriff s office dispatched the Boardman ambulance to a residence in Boardman for a possible heart attack victim One subject was transported to Good Shepherd; Morrow Cminty Sheriff s office responded to investigate a Burglary with the Boardman Police depart ment assisting laic to Rios. 27, Iran sicnt arrested for Burglary I, Theft 1 and Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle Subject was transported to Benton Co Jail and lodged on above charges. Dec 4 Morrow County deputies responded to assist Boardman Police department with investigation of ac cident report and Driving While Under the Influence of Intoxicants arrest; Morrow County Sheriffs office dispatched Boardman Fire Depart menl to wash down debris from one- vchiclc rollover; Morrow County deputies respond ed to assist Children s Service Divi sion with a juvenile problem. Merritt Harold Gray, Heppner Exceeding the Maximum Speed 71 mph in a 55 mph zone, $30 fine Heppner Police Report Economic Indicators We've all heard reports about how the "Index of Economic Indicators" tells us that times are good And most of us look about and ask "Where'1*' We're told that some forward looking indicator tells us some future time will be even better And mow of us wonder how they can see so far into the future The presidential campaign debated the ' goodness'' of the past eight years, one side calling a a period of prosper) ty. the other promising even better B> Fd Glenn times Just the other day our Governor _______________ _ said times were so good, we should spend more lax money than we can afford. Incidentally, our new representative is in a real box He's pledged to us not to lift tl»e state spending limit svhen his own party has sowed to do jusi that We'll see. But about the economy, most of us don't trust the "Index ’’ Wc never see the boom associated with a nsc in wholesale orders, or a drop in the foreign trade deficit Sometimes I think the news about economic prosperity is generated by the press in order to sell papers And if they can make it promising enough, and sell enough more papers, then sure enough, pro sperity comcs--lo the newspapers All is not idle copy for the mass media, however This writer has a reliable, visible and verifiable index of economic propserity And this is just the time of year this index tell* it* story As I see it. the most reliable indicator is the "New Pickup Count Just this morning, the coffee shop was abuzz with congratulations to one of the regulars who showed up in brand new pickup Reports of our friends and neighbors who had either bought or who were looking came from every corner Used pickup* count too. generally indicating a trade up All of us can keep score but looking to see who is driving a new rig (and who is not) And when the coffee shop parking lot shoves few. if any. familiar old pickup*, we can measure the magnitude of the "recovery " Not to be left behind, we. too, arc driving a "new" pickup a 1965 Dodge given us by the mothcr-in law Editorial Dam good sports It could have been a pretty boring November around here this year. But it w asn't. Because of a couple o f teams from lone and Heppner wc were treated to some pretty good sports this fall, and from members of the community, these young people deserve some thanks Thanks for the hard work and determination that got you to the playoffs Thanks for the hours o f practice you spent, perfecting your skills on the volleyball court and football field Thanks for the men tal determination it takes to go out and play, week after week through a long hard season But most o f all thanks for letting us share in your victories, as well as your defeats.
