IHsIrtlxjOon David and April Sykes, Publishers L e tte rs to th e E d ito r A softer approach is needed To the Editor I am writing this letter out of the concern I felt after attending the swimming lessons at the Hcppner Pool on Monday. July 18 My daughter is 4 years old She is a "beginner" at swimming My husband and I had encouraged her to lake swimming lessons, and tried to reassure her it would he a fun way to I cam to he comfortable in the water We also told her that if she started the lessons she had lo finish them. On Monday morning, she was all escitcd and ready to go When we arrived at the pool there were 42 children for the "beginners” class. I instructor and 2 pool employees. When the instructor approached the children she told them "gruffly" lo sit on the edge of the pool Then, in stead of trying to warm up to the kids, she shouted "get into the water,” which most of them did, some did not They were then told to "bob” their entire bodies and heads under water the fact llic water is usually cold, several of the kids began to cry When she came to my daughter and my daughter was hesitant, she turned to my 4 year old and said “ get up and get out!” , so rudely. I was shocked My point is; it beginners lessons are only for children who already know how to swim, why are they called beginners and. where arc the little ones supposed to learn the %im pic basics, and learn to enjoy the water”' I think it’s a real shame the way this instructor turned a positive, ex citing event into a humiliating ex perience and left a little girl crying and wondering what she had done wrong I don't doubt the capability of this instructor and I'm sure her "army type" methods are fine for jr high aged kids But. she really needs to remember what its like to he a 4 year old and learn a little compassion, a softer approach and a smile wouldn't hurl either Sincerely, (s) Kacdene Bailey Downtown needs sprucing up To the Editor: Thanks to the Garden Club and business people for the trees and beautiful flowers downtown. My theory (borrowed from so meone else, of course) is that if you try enough wild schemes, one or two is hound to turn out ok It's t)ie numbers game they all talk about And volume I By Ed Glenn makes up for quality in the scheme making business Well, now I’ve got one. a wild scheme that turned out to be a good idea, and I d like to take a little space to brag about it Everyone should do that, you know Everyone should brag a little about themselves when they have a chance It s the winery Nearly 10 years ago now. I had this wild idea about planting winegrapes and building a winery as a way lo use this neat piece of property where Franck and I wanted to build a home You just don't buy 50 acres as a homesite. you see You have to grow something on it and I didn't know a thing about potatoes nor did I own a combine They told us you can t grow wine grapes in eastern Oregon and that might yet he true We had to give up part of the property, including the ideal home site It’s a melon patch now. why didn’t I think o f that’’ But we did build a winery Too small to be profitable nut we have made some good wine some years Mostly, it's a pain in the neck to pump money into a project that also takes so much hard work Nevertheless, it turned out to he a good idea You see. these hot days we've been having are too much for the aircon- ditioner in the house It gets downright uncomfortable in our living room these afternoons But the winery is smaller, well insulated and has two airconditinerv It just wouldn't do to let the wine get warm The winery is nice and cool, even when it's well over a hundred out. You cant' imagine the many little odd chores that need to he done out in the winery these days A winery is sure a g«*xl idea when it's hot Corrections Hospital Notes f The Winery's Cool pk , reg 2 49 Parkay .Western Family N^Salad Macaroni Sea Shells Margarine i ib. cube re* 79 * Tillamook Cheese 2 lb brick, reg 5.79 SAW Black Olives s« oz Prices good July 28 •I**«, •I**« • m « 5 0 V •4 * * . *1**» - August 1 OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK - 7 A M. - 6 P.M. l o t ib k C o u r t 111 N Court S tr e e t M ark et Heppner 676-9643
