Horton Ralph A Horton. U6. formerly of Astoria and Dallas. Oregon passed away January 19. 1988 in a care center He was bom March I, 1891, in Akron. Ohio He was one of the first employees of the Pacific Power and Light Company going to work for them in 1911 in Walla Walla. Washington He was Superintendent of the Astoria power plant when he retired in 1956 and then moved to Dallas. Oregon Mr Fkirton was an accom plished amateur photograhper, a member of the I O O F. Lodge, a member of the Dallas Mens Garden Club and the United MrtNidist Church He was a member of the Angora Hiking Club in Astoria He is survived by a daughter-in- law June A Horton of Roseburg. two daughters Helen and her hus- hand Fredrick Martin of lone and Lucy and her husband John Todd of Roseburg. one son Raymond and his wife June E Horton He was preceded in death by his wife Florence in 1979 and a son Lester in 1986 Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren Services was held Friday. Jan 15. 1988 al Amber Valley Care Center She was bom Sept. 3, 1920 in Pendleton, daughter of Henry and Winifred Hanscom Struve Both her paternal grandfather Hans Struve, and maternal grandfather. Jotham Hanscom. homesteaded farms north of Pendleton in the early 1880s Her early years were spent on the Struve homestead ranch purchased by her father located ten miles west of Pendleton at the Yoakum Road exit off Interstate 84 She graduated from Pendleton High School in 1928 and following one year at Mills College in Oakland. Calif., completed her bachelor of arts degree at the University of Oregon in 1932 She met and married Blaine “ Bill” Isom of Heppner in 1935 and they lived in Hcppncr where they eventually established and jointly ran an insurance business In 1947. Mrs Isom's father. Henry Struve, died and the Isoms moved to Pendleton to manage the ranch Mrs Isom was active in Parent Teacher Associatkin work in the |950's and '60s serving as president of the Pendleton Junmr High PTA and six years on the state PTA board She chaired two state PT A conventions in Pendleton As an ac tive American Association of University Women member, she toe used on legislative and interna tional affairs and had an AAUW scholarship awarded in her name Other community participation in eluded membership in the Ruth laKus Chapter of Eastern Star (Heppner». Daughters of the Nile. Indies' Oriental Shrine. Pioneer Club. Research Club, Umatilla County Historical Society and Oregon Wheat Growers league She and her husband enjoyed traveling, visiting Asia. Jeanne Grable, Kathry (Mrs Myron) Ramey, and Jessie Fumishm, all of Pendleton Memorial contribution» may be made to the Umatilla County Historical Society, the National Wildlife Federatkin or the Salvatkin Arms Electrolysis & Thermolysis Permanent Hair Removal Anna Schwarzin Certified Electroloffist 676-9248 Farm & Builders Supply 676-9157 or 676-5001 ■ 4 -* ____ _________. . _■ Winegrapes vs. Wheat There'» a lawsuit abrewin' between a couple of friends of mine that'* be ing watched by a lot of folks On one side are the winegrape growers, the newcomers, and on the other side, the wheat farmers, the old timers The newcomers claim 2.4 D damages their winegrapes The old tuners claim they can't grow wheat without it Its hard to take sides on this one Wheal farmers, especially dry land wheat farmers arc a major part of the back bone of this county Wheat is far and away the most valuable farm crop grown here Wheat farmers are the kind of people that I'm proud to call my friends and neighbors And they 've been here growing wheat for several gencralkms That doesn't make wrong right hut it does count for a little On ihe other hand, when the 2.4 D they use drifts onto another field, that's trespass just as if vime stranger would walk into your house and sit down for a few hours of TV Grape growers arc special friends of mine, not just because they grow a crop that I can make into wine (and I dearly love to do that), but became I think this county has tremendous ptKcniial for the whole wine indusiry And grapes are no small potatoes The 8(8) or so acres already planted to winegrapes will produce crops valued at more than $2 million in the next year or two That crop could nearly double the winegrape crop of the enure state and Morrow County could be the site for three or four mi jor wineries with maybe 2 300.000 visitors a year When we have the wineries to process the grapes, the finished product will have a wholesale value of S8-I0 million On the other hand, the 2.4 D drift is a real problem I have seen the damage My humble opinion is that it's not as bad as some would claim, but it is a problem It's more like that stranger spitting on your sidewalk than sitting in your living room It's hard to take sides Somewhere there is a compromise if both sides continue to talk Working it out themselves is far better than a lawsuit, where nobody wins but the lawyers We all have a stake in it After all. we arc all neighbors Evelyn Isom gal.
