December 6 around the Summerfield Ridge area MifF was to walk from where his lather was. up the hill along a mad to where his mother was waiting in the pick up. about 200 yards He never showed up He was wearing snow pants, ski jacket, a hat with Haps and gloves and ho»4s A good thing for him that he was dressed warmly The temperature was not kwi cold that night, but the wind chill factor made it very cold up on the ridges M iff walked and walked, he said When he would see lights ln>m some rig up on a ridge he would walk towards the I ght but it would be gone before he could get there He found a watering trough, "w here cows <lnnk" and stayed pretty close to (hi* for a while He had nothing to eat but got very thirsty He could see lights from towns very far away After a while he found a tree, and since M iff likes to climb trees, he climbed this one and slept all night in it He evidently got in the saddle o f the tree and slept helween two branches cradling him there He slept until the next morning when two planes were circling overhead and woke him He says " i t was the big one that woke me up " The planes were piloted by Denny Nave. w ith Linda Nave and Barb VanArsdalc spotting and John Boyer Linda was the one that spot ted M iff The rescue occurred about H 28 a m M iff said he "looked up the h ill and a pick up came down after him " His great uncle. Crcston Robinson thinks M ill must have walked about live miles When asked what he did all Ihe time he was lost. M iff replied "sleep, sleep, sleep " He says from now on when he goes to the nioun tains he is going to take his hue kpus k with "lo ts o f food. pop. nulk. an ax and a whistle " When the dogs started raising a fuss in two o f the draws, the people were kept out o f the area so as not to confuse them "W e knew he had to be there'" says his mother, "b u t * wc couldn't go in and find him because we would contuse the dog with our scent " Instrumental in the search were three search dogs from Richland and Kennewick. Boardman Ambulance crew, Columbia Basin Licetric Civ op crew and 30 to 40 Civilian volunteers The search was co-ordinated by Deputy Mark Calbick There were a lot o f volunteers gathering for the second search and Kin/ua was on standby Dispatchers Terry Denton, I ami Robertson.
